Hi all,
I have finally graduated from ERAU (that bull sh!t degree you get if you are in the military) and proud of it. I go up in front of a upt selection board in July. (guard base) Any advice on things they like to see in a cover letter or at the interview? I'm begging. Prior service, Air Force, 150hrs flt time. I joined this site 2 years ago and now I finally need help. Kind of exciting I guess.

Thanks,

"Viper flyer" wannabe

I don't know why it says military under flight experience. I must have goofed.

Thanks for any help.
Good luck with the interview. My friend, an F-14 RIO, got last year's slot. This person is a top-notch individual and competition will certainly be fierce. Nonetheless, you have an inside track, given that you are already involved with the unit in an enlisted capacity. The questions they ask you might very well be a tad different than the ones asked to a straight civilian. My interview 5 1/2 years ago, with the 121FS, 113FW out of Andrews, was fairly straight-forward and incredibly professional. They asked exactly what I'd expect them to.

"Why do you want to be a member of our unit?"

"What do you bring to the table that would cause us to want to hire you over the next guy?"

"Do you have a problem dropping bombs which might kill people?"

"Tell us about a time that you had an emergency in an aviation environment."

"Why the Guard over Active Duty?"

"What will you do for money once you get mission-ready and become a part-timer?"

"Are you prepared to move to the DC area?"

"What is one of your biggest faults/negatives?"

This is just a few of the questions. All in all, a great experience. Too bad I got DQ'd due to a red/green color problem in my eyes! I'd be flying Vipers right now with a grin from ear to ear....Good luck up in DLH!

Thanks for the info. I now have all those questions ready to go, and if you think of any more I wouldn't mind you sharing them.

Thanks again,

Luke

If they ask if you are willing to get "loaned" out to the Army to do convoy support duties between Al Ramadi and Balad Airfield prior to SUPT, would you say yes? There was a guy who was accepted and waiting to go to SUPT that did just that. His unit didn't realize the Army was going to use him for that mission. Unit to remain anonymous.

Fortunately, he came out ok...I think.

Unfortunately, they aren't giving waivers for lost of limb in SUPT.

I don't want to act like I'm not a team player, but you're right. I can't fly airplanes if I'm missing my legs.
I'll have to think about that one........

Thanks

whoaaaa

F16fixer, how did you find out you have an interview? I'm REAL curious since I was last year's alternate and I've heard absolutely nothing. And the guy who got last year's slot was a member of the unit.

Anicient chinese secret.
No not really. While on active duty, my commander was very supportive of me and made a couple of phone calls to some guard bases that I was going to apply at. They told him that with my jet experience and a few other things considered that I should at least get an interview without a problem. Nothing else promised! So when I posted my questions, I just ASSUMED I would make it to the interview stage and I figured I would keep a long story short. Thanks for asking though. Best of luck my friend. If you don't mind me asking, was there anything else that you think didn't get you the slot besides not being in the military?

I thought the person who got last year's slot was an F-14 RIO, or has the time flown by and that person actually got it in 2002?

whew

Now that I've cleaned my pants....haha. Well good luck to ya. I would bet you'd get an interview also if you have a commander making calls, so hopefully we both get the call. Yeah the select from last year was a weapons guy with the unit if I remember right. It could have been the year before last for the RIO, I'm not sure. Being a civ played an indirect role in not getting the primary I guess.
