Just picked up a study guide for the Flight Aptitude Exam.............................

1.)How long is all the training for someone interested in doing Reserve flying for the Navy??

2.) Does the Navy Gaurantee a Fixed Wing Slot or particular aircraft before I'm off to OTS?

3.)Where would I do my reserve time after I return to Civ life?

Gotta go active before reserve. The AF is the only branch where you can go directly to Reserve/Guard. Well, army I guess too...

I'm not sure where the Navy reserve units are, but most do their time wherever they can get hired on.

No guarantees on getting fixed wing. It's all based on your performance during pilot training.

You need to active before you can get a reserve slot in the Navy. That can be as little as three years active in a program called FTS. Basically your an active admin person working for the reserves in a flying status for 3 years then you can fly 737's or GVI's and GV's in the reserves. Or, like I did, you can fly tactical jets for 8 years and deploy on a carrier then get on with a reserve unit in a fighter or training jet.

The FTS program won't get you enough hours to get on with the majors, but the second option will.

Both programs require you to go through the entire flight training sylabus and are very competitive. If you really want to do just reserves, look into the Air National Guard. However, those slots usually go to active guys that have moved on to the airlines, but want to retire out of the military reserves.

It can be very complicated, but keep researching and you wil fine the info.

Designation as a FTS usually requires that you complete your active duty obligation. A few newly winged folks have been assigned to the reserves recently because the Navy has more new pilots than they have training slots in the traditional pipelines. Don't count on that option because it probably won't be around very long, though.

Bottom line is if you don't want to go active duty you'll need to find a slot with one of the other services.

Navy Reserves disappearing

There may not be a Naval Reserve flying operation in the future, or at least considerably downsized. The Active Duty Navy is misappropriating (poor choice of words) all of the reserves hardware assets. The P-3 reserves are gone and others will follow.

I agree with pilotyip... flying in the Navy Reserves may soon be a thing of the past as the active duty side strives to get more toys in their ever dwindling arsenal. The VR (C-40/C-130/C-9, etc.) community may be the only one left standing in a couple of years, and there is no guarantee of that. On a lighter note we (in VR) are getting some nugget pilots straight outta winging here shortly. I guess the Navy trained too many last year. Not a bad gig... got 200 hours under your belt and go directly to the business end of a 737-700 or G -V. I can't wait to fly bounce hops with those guys!

Best of luck.

Fly nAAvy,

VR is my long term goal. I have orders to fly T-45's here pretty quick, but want to put in a TAR package as soon as I can. How competetive is that lately? VR-61 is where I want to end up (born and raised in WA). Is TAR a good life or a lot of paper?

If TAR does not happen, how competitive are SELRES slots for a prowler bubba with them if I am planning on living in the area?

Relately, any idea when those guys will get the 737?

Thanks!

Whidbey
