June 17, 2004 -- Gregg Overman, Allied Pilots Association Communications Director said yesterday that U.S. Senator Ernest Hollings of South Carolina is attempting to attach an amendment to the Homeland Security appropriations bill. The change would overturn a recent TSA rule allowing deadheading pilots to keep their firearm in the cabin with them.

The union opposes the amendment and believes Congress should instead be focusing on ways to enhance, not dilute, the Federal Flight Deck Officer program’s effectiveness.

[font=Times New Roman, Times, serif]Grinstein says change is mandatory

June 17, 2004 -- Delta Air Lines' Chief Executive Gerald Grinstein said Wednesday it is "completely clear" the airline cannot survive as is, as fare levels continue to erode despite an improving economy. But he said Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection would only be used if no other path were available.

"While the situation is extremely serious and I cannot minimize that, the marketplace has just simply undergone a fundamental, structural and permanent change and we recognize it," he said.

Speaking at a transportation conference in New York, Grinstein said Delta's access to capital markets has "virtually disappeared."

The Atlanta-based airline on Tuesday said it was pulling back its September schedule for Song, its low-fare airline unit, by 25 percent but expected to resume the full schedule of 144 daily flights in October.

Delta is still negotiating with the Air Line Pilots Association on reducing pay rates. Grinstein said management would not accept concessions from unionized pilots that provide only a partial solution to the airline's cost problem.

A company review begun in January is expected to be complete by the second or third week of August, Grinstein said.

June 17, 2004 – ATA today said the airline’s $100 million training center has still not received the green light to begin construction. According to The Chicago Tribune, the 190,000 sq. ft. facility, which would include a number of aircraft simulators, is slated for a parcel of land near Midway Airport.

ATA vice chairman Jim Hlavacek said the company can barely afford to fund new aircraft much less the new training facility in the airline’s current economic state. The company insists it is still committed to the project, but officials were unable to provide a groundbreaking date.

June 17, 2004 -- Boeing is talking with 30 companies worldwide about signing on for the 7E7 Dreamliner, according to a story in Aero News Network today. “If things keep going like this,” says 7E7 Senior Vice President Mike Bair, “Boeing could sell 500 Dreamliners before the aircraft rolls out in 2007.”

Boeing has already sold both All Nippon Airways and Air New Zealand on the Dreamliner, promising to deliver passengers to their destinations at a 20-percent fuel savings.

The latest market under Boeing's microscope is Europe. "I'm absolutely convinced you're going to see this airplane in the UK and flying around with British airline colors," said Boeing Commercial Aircraft's top salesman in Europe, Marlin Dailey. He said Boeing is in talks with up to a dozen European airlines
