Hypothetically - if a new management team is to takeover one of the majors -- say US Air, or UAL (after the pensions are wiped out) or DAL (post bankruptcy) -- what can it do to improve morale without restoring wages to earlier levels? Is it even possible to boost morale at companies.

Continental is an example that often comes to mind but some argue that after putting up with Lorenzo the Bethune led group was welcomed with open arms (because the pilots had been through a lot worse).

Is a turnaround like CAL possible at any of the majors today? What will it take?

No but that flashing banner ad next to the aircraft photo that says "you've just won 1,000 dollars in free groceries!" might just help the pilots of that plane. Especially if they don't have to report it as income to the food stamp people.
