Could somebody educate me on the finer points of the ILS PRM at MSP? Never flown in there before and have a trip there next week. Just curious about what it exactly entails, anybody who has done it before and things to look out for. We are Part 91 in a Citation 560. Hmmmm.....might have to pull out the FAR/AIM.

Thanks Guys.

Jeppesen publishes seperate pages for each airport for the requirements for PRM approaches.

The jist of it is:

Have comm 1 on tower
Have comm 2 on the monitor freq
TCAS can now be left in TA/RA
A breakout manuever will be given as a turn and either a climb or descent
You don't have to descend at more than 1000fpm
Breakout manuevers must be hand flown

My advice: When checking in with MSP Approach/Center advise them unable PRMs. The chances they'lll be doing them is pretty slim anyways

They require air carriers to have an Op Spec to shoot the ILS PRM and have completed simulator training in performing the ILS PRM breakaway maneuvers.

I've been flying in and out of MSP for about 6 years now, first in corporate airplanes and now in CRJ's based in MSP - I couldn't even begin to guess at the number of hundreds of approaches I've done into MSP and I have NEVER done a PRM approach - I'm sure that they use them occasionally but I've never done one nor do I know anyone that has ever done one.

Don't worry about it - you won't have to do it....if the moons are aligned correctly and they are using it just say you're 'unable' and they'll probably give you the new runway (17). They never use PRM at MSP.

ILS PRM's are no big deal. Listen and talk on one freq, just listen on another. Not sure about other airports, but the one at PHL seems to angle the LOCs away from each other. I dont know if this is because of the ILS PRM or what.

Also, if one of the runways at MSP is too short for airliners, but long enough for you, they may take you around and ILS PRM you into the shorter runway. May be quicker than getting in line.

Better yet, just say no.

Airline safety departments have been arguing this one with as much vigor as they did LAHSO. Descending breakouts? Handflown breakout maneuvers?

The reason this is rarely done in Philly and MSP is because it's just not safe.

Especially for low-timers this is an invitation to lose situational awareness. Have them remove the automation, turn off the course, and potentially continue a descent. Without structured training (to make certain that somebody resets the altitude alterter) this is just a little dicey for me.

I'd tell em' no thanks.
