I arrived at ILM (Wilmington, NC) at 0130 local this morning after the tower was closed. The ATIS was not providing weather information, but there is a lighted windsock on the field which indicated that winds were favoring runway 24.

However, the pilot controlled lighting only turned on the lights for runway 17-35. Winds were relatively light (sock not at full extension), so we did a crosswind landing on 35.

There is no NOTAM (on duats) saying that the RWY 6-24 lights were out of service. Activating the pilot controlled lighting did activate the taxiway lighting associated with RWY 6-24.

The AFD says "Arpt lgts opr 0500-1100Z" (We landed 0530), and "Activate REIL RWY 24, MALSR RWY 35, HIRL, RWY 17-35, TWY A lgt- CTAF)."

1- I have a need to travel to ILM occasionally, and occasionally late at night. How do I activate the 6-24 lights? The lady at the Air Wilmington FBO didn't know.

2- How do you get the correct weather information from a controlled field with an ATIS, when the TWR is closed, and therefore there is no weather information on ATIS?

Thanks!

I just looked at the charts for ILM and it looks like the lights for 6-24 should be on at all times. Other lights at the airport are pilot controlled. I would call the airport manager and ask what is going on, somebody might have turned them off by mistake that night.

You can get the weather by calling FSS, or maybe Washington Center on 124.02 if they aren't too busy.
