Hey, got word that a bud of mine just upgraded to captain after 5 years at NJ.
Could of held a slot earlier, but it was some how advantageous for him to wait till the IBT contract was ratified. Any idea why? Thanks.
rgrds,

Used to be a thing called bypass pay. If a guy junior to you upgraded in a different fleet, which you couldn't hold due to seat lock, you got capt pay. Many stayed in the right seat due to schedule and vacation seniority since they already got the pay. Now that has gone away, and anyone who wants to make the cash needs to upgrade. Now that 90% can hold 7/7, it's not so bad, not to mention the HBA deal.

Under the old contract he could collect Captain Bypass Pay and remain a F/O with better seniority. There was no finanacial advantage to upgrade. The new contract did away with that loophole. You have to upgrade when able or lose the bypass pay.
