Hello all-

I am currently preparing for IFR training. By preparing I mean I am studying up until I can afford the 10 day program at my favorite flight school (MNaviation). I recently sent off for the Sporty's IFR video set, and I have the ASA study guide. Being that I am not very patient with sitting and reading at length, I'm guessing that the videos will be my main source of study, with brief reviews of sections from the book. My goal is to be ready for, or have taken the IFR written before heading off for that training.

My questions are:
Is there anything FAR'wise wrong with my plan? That is, can an instructor review my knowledge level, find me ready for the written, and sign me off.

Would anyone suggest Microsoft flight sim software for IFR practicebefore the real thing? Does it even go to that level?

Other than my above study plan, are there any other recomendations you all might suggest?

Any pro's or con's you all see in my plan will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
 
As long as you are studying under Part 61, your instructor should be able to sign you off when he/she feels you are ready for your written. You will have to show your instructor that you are ready.

As for resources, I would highly recommend Jeppesen's Instrument/Commercial textbook. You mentioned that you were not very patient with books, but this probably should find its way into your library. It is very comprehensive with many examples. It also makes clear distinctions of both NOAA and Jeppesen chart symbols. It also has a lot of neat pictures 8>).

I have always pointed my instrument students toward Microsoft Flight Sim. For procedures training it is hard not to include it in your training. It contains all of the airports, navaids, intersections, and terrain. You can practice all of the instrument approach procedures where you do your instrument training right from your own computer. And at $50-$60, it's hard to ignore. How much do you pay per hour to fly a C172 around with an instructor?

This is an important and difficult certificate. I'm encouraged that you are anxious to get through it, but be sure you don't go so fast that you miss something. Be thorough.

awesome advice and tips. i will make the jeppsen's instrument textbook a part of my next sproty's buy/fbo visit/other aviation $$ spending venture. i will look back at MS IFR training.

thank you for your concern about my speed in finishing IFR. i'm actually looking to gain a firm IFR knowledge prior to going to my favorite flight school for the 10 day training. i'm hoping to go with enough knowledge to severly cut down on my time spent. thier prorgram takes you from no IFR knowledge to IFR cert. i'm figuring that if i arrive with a solid enough knowledge to have passed the written with a good score, it should not take me the entire 10 days. that being the case, i'm hoing my study will save me $$ also.

i'm not looking to get my study done fast. i'm hoping that by going about it this way, i will lock the knowledge in how i want/need it. "to thine own self be true" right? i'm not the best flight student i the world. hopefully i'll make it as easy on my next victim. . . .er... instructor as possible.

now. . . . .where are those MS flight sim disks?? . . .
