I know and read about the 6 approaches etc to maintain current. But I remember something about you have 6 additional months where you can still get current with a safety pilot. But I can't find it in the regs for the life of me. Where is it?
 
You are correct. You have 6 months after your currency expires to regain currency by flying 6 approaches including holding and tracking procedures. If you do not regain currency during that time frame, then the only way to renew is by Instrument Proficiency Check.

The regulation you're looking for is 61.57(d).
