I am trying to get my Gold Seal CFI rating. I have met all the requirements. One of them is to have an Advanced or Instrument Ground Instructor Rating. I have the results of the written test, and plan to visit my local FSDO to get that rating tomorrow.

In anticipation of this I have also filled out the appropriate IACRA form. I was also trying to fill out an IACRA form for the Gold Seal Endorsement. I was unable to find the appropriate check boxes in the IACRA maze.

Is it possible to apply for this rating on IACRA? Is it possible to get both ratings at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

For what it's worth, no one calls it an IACRA. It's an 8710. Numbers are just easier than acrynoms. But, to answer your question, there is no box to check. it goes on the "other" line. Type Gold Seal and your good to go. One other thing, you may want to check the requirements before going in. It used to be that you could only apply during a normal renewal or addition to your CFI. You couldn't go in and randomly add it to your CFI. I know when I did mine in '02, the FSDO I used was very strict about that.

Thanks Propilot

I know all about the 8710 as that is what I have filled out more times than I would have liked (I hate tedious forms). My local FSDO which is a new one to me requires that any 8710 be filled out online via the IACRA web site, which as far as I can tell does not allow you to enter things freely.

Well you can safely ignore Propilot - he doesn't have a clue what you're talking about.

IACRA is nice - but it has it's flaws, and some of the more obscure options is one area it collapses. When I was using it "full time" it wouldn't let you approve checkrides after your CFI expired and before the renewed CFI data was entered in the system - no way around it.

So just fill out a nice paper 8710 - you'll probably find the FSDO will be happy you did, they don't trust computers much either :) I used to fill out the basics and take it to the FSDO and ask them "I want this, what would you like checked off" - like many things at the FSDO you can get different answers to the same question - so just let your inspector tell you what they want.

IACRA will allow you to renew a CFI with a Gold Seal if you already have it but for an initial Gold Seal it just doesn't fit the maze unless maybe if you "jimmied" IACRA to make it work and checked off that you have a Gold Seal. However in that case do that only with the FSFO direction. Best to do what CFIse sez and fill out a paper 8710 and bring it to the FSDO along with your documentation of 10 students and so forth.

Congratulations of your Gold Seal accomplishment. Good instructors are worth their weight in Gold to this industry.

I'm too lazy to look it up, how do u get a Gold Seal? I gather its have an advanced ground instructor rating and pass 10/10? Anything else?

The requirements for a gold seal
At least 10 passed students in a 2 year period with an %80 pass on first try.

You must also have a Advanced ground instructor or Instrument Ground Instructor Rating.

Some other requirements for the rating at least for me:

Spend some time trying to get the IACRA configured for the gold seal

Spend one of your few precious days off driving down to visit the local FSDO.

Wait in the lobby while the FSDO employee is in the back looking up the requirements for the Gold Seal, and then still cant figure it out.

Spend a few hours killing time while same employee takes two hour lunch.

Return after power lunch to different FAA employee who knew what he was doing.

Benefits of Gold Seal: Priceless

It used to be that you could only apply during a normal renewal or addition to your CFI. You couldn't go in and randomly add it to your CFI.

You may renew your certificate at any time, and at the same time, apply for the gold seal.
