Ok, I found out today that I will have my first solo on Wednesday and I am very excited if not very nervous. We wnet out today and flew to an uncontrolled airport and did touch and go's. Up to this point I was not very comfortable with landings, I just couldn't quite get the transition to climb and flare (the 2 most important parts :) haha). Today it seemed to click and after the first two T&G's the rest were very comfortable and felt a lot better. So I guess I am ready to solo, we are going to have at least 2 more lessons before then, maybe a third, I would like to go back out and do more T&G's without having to worry about doing stalls and all the other maneuvers.

So on Wednesday, weather permitting, I will join the ranks of others on this board and have my first solo down and then begin work on X/C's which I can't wait for, because it sure is a lot of fun to actually fly somewhere instead of going to the practice area and doing emergency descents.......

Wish me luck and stay out of the sky on Wed :)

Goodluck! enjoy.... I'll stay at home hahahah

With all the problems in the airline industry (and aviation in general) today, we sometimes forget the simple joys of flying. With all the worrying going on about contracts, furloughs, work rules, who's got how many hours, and so on... we tend to forget from where we came. Despite our differences as pilots we all can remember the excitement and nervousness associated with our first solo. It's something I know that I will never forget.

Thank you for your post, Smokehouse, and I know I speak for everyone else on the board when I say good luck and welcome to our "ranks."

Congratulations, its a great accomplishment. Builds up some confidence, and you'll have an extra bounce in your step afterward.
June 12th, will be 5 years since i soloed!

It is wonderful to see that you are as excited and neverous as I was. I am sure that you will be as successful as others have been before you. Just sit back and enjoy the experience because it is one that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Good luck!

Smokehouse, congrats, I solo for the first time tomorrow, June 12th, Went up today and practiced t&gs with the owner of the flight school.

He also gave me a progress check and said go for it tomorrow.
I am so excited and feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I look forward to posting about the solo tomorrow, but have you checked out www.studentpilot.com yet. I love this sight but I do enjoy SP also, many more people in our situation. Go to the message board and then go to flight training, post a hello and you will get many replies.

Good Luck,

I sincerely hope that your solo goes well today. It's a great feeling when you climb out of the plane by yourself for the first time.

I will add though that the biggest mistake I made as an instructor was to tell one of my students when his solo was going to be. He invited his whole family out to watch. When we went to practice, he was horrible. His confidence was shot and there was no way I was letting him up by himself, family audience or not.

I never saw that student again. I called and called but couldn't talk him into coming back out.

From that point on, I would do the ol' surprise solo, like was done to me. It didn't give them time to get worked up about it or call their families to come watch.

Good luck!

You will hear your instructor's voice in your head. It's the darndest thing.

My dad, former RCAF from WWII, said that I would look over at that seat and be struck by how empty it would appear. I guess my dad liked having an instructor on board more than I did. :D

Do everything just like you normally do. A poorly set up approach should mean a go-around. Nothing wrong with that.

Savor this and remember it. It compares to few other events in life.

The VERY first thing I thought when I was taking off on my first solo was "WOW, WE SURE ARE CLIMBING FAST" My second thought was "WHAT DO YOU MEAN -WE-?"

:D

You will remember that flight for the rest of your life. Relax and enjoy it!
