My name is Scott, I have been flying since I was 15 and I will have the time for my ATP in 6 months. I know that I can get a letter of Aeronautical Competency then get my ATP at 23. I asked the local DE about this and he had no idea, never heard of it. Also, I see that in FAR 61.35(a)(2)(iii)(Pre-requisites for a written test) it says that I need to provide proof that I will be old enough to take the practical before the written test expires. My questions are...How do I get a testing facility to let me take the written test before I am 21, and how can I get a DE to give me a practical and thus a letter of Aeronautical Competency. BTW, I do work for a 135 company and I know about the indefinate extension of the written, but I still need to find a testing center that will let me take the test before I am 21.

Thanks guys/gals.

Scott...
It's been a while since I last read anything about the Letter of Aeronautical Competency, but I seem to remember that the FAA no longer does this. JAFI is the one that will know for sure.

I'd try calling the testing centers and telling them your situation (working for 135 - extension on the written). They should be able to let you take it.

Don't know about the practical before age 23 though...

Well Scott, I am older than 20 and I want a set of long legged athletic twins to make me feel 20 again. ... Oh, I thought we were sharing.

However, I think in both cases we will just have to keep wanting.... Your “Letter of Competency” was in the reg prior to the 1998 re-write. Sorry, not anymore. You must be 23 to take the ATP practical exam. The written you can take, like you said, in time enough to be good when you take the practical exam.

quick answer is you MUST be 21 years before taking the written and 23 years before the checkride. there isn't an exemption anymore to allow for the "does not meet icao" as far as age. sorry. gotta be 23 to be a passenger captain. you can fly as a cargo captain til then

StarCk20, the page you referenced is 8 years old. This provision was dropped in 1998. Sorry.

Since you gotta wait 3 more years , why don't you work on a degree? It's easier to get it while you're younger.

StarChk, The 8700 reference is outdated. Before 1998 you could take the ATP ride before you were 23, not any more. The reference is incorrect and 7 years out of date with the FAR's. This is just some of the fun that is my life...

P.S. I will still take the twins though...

T-Gates, when you get your ATP have an Inspector upgrade the Types to ATP. An Examiner cannot (I should say, should not) do it. But go the FSDO and an Inspector can do so.

Just think... You'll have 3 more years to practice and get really really good for the checkride. :p
