I've got a hypothetical situation for you. Which would you choose?

1. Stable company paying below industry average. 500+ hours per year. low QOL

or

2. 75 year old business owner who smokes paying slightly above industry average. 200 hrs per year. good QOL

same aircraft for both operations

In this situation, it depends on what your goals are. Do you want to build more time and then leave, or make it a career. If you want to build more time, I would choose #1. If you are content with a good QOL and "ok" pay I would choose #2.

If you are 58yrs old, go for the $$$$.

If you are 30 yrs old, go for the stability and fight like mad to get your pay up.

define low QOL?

how many stable good compnaies pay low AND have poor QOL?

Usually one or the other prevails (good pay/QOL) unless you are lucky - then you get both!

Im a QOL guy myself - or at least thats my excuse for not making the 250K+ others here at FI.com make!

Using my past experience, I without a doubt would go with #2 QOL and ask for the opportunity to pickup contract flying to maintain proficiency.....extra dinero. Screw the time buliding and network contract flying.

Have you thought about these factors?

a) What would most likely happen to the job/aircraft in job #2, if the principal was no longer around?

b) What is the life expectancy of a 75 year old smoker?

Nothing personal intended to any party; it's just business.

If the guy is 75 and still smoking he won't be around much longer and you will probably be out on the street again. Might as well go for the time and experience and move on when the opportunity presents itself.

Good luck, regardless.

IF he lived for another 5 years, then how would your decision work out!;)
