Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what the initial package of books HPA sends you is? I wondered if they include any systems video or CD's, or is it all manuals?

The package I received a couple of months ago had the operations manual, handouts, a folder with systems review questions, and three CDs. The CDs have one video of the preflight flow, an audio file that describes all of the switches and panels, and power point slides that show the aircraft exterior and preflight items. In the handouts there are some general instructions on what you need to study, a test bank of questions they test you on when you arrive, critical memory item and ops limits test, some oral review gouge, and then some other general information on the class.

Thanks, I think I am ready to sign up. Were you happy with HPA? I have read most of the older posts, and it seems like a good place.

I attended the B-737 course at HPA last summer and it was a class act all of the way.:D
 
My class starts next Monday, but so far the people at HPA have been great. They are willing to answer any questions and even called me yesterday to do one final check to see if I needed anything. I have yet to hear anything bad about them.

Just finished my type @ HPA in April 2004. They do a fantastic job getting your ready for the orals, and checkride . . . Ditto on Srjorion's info . . . Don't forget the 60 hours home study before you get there.

Just got my package from HPA and noticed the sim approach plates are Jepps. Being a military type of guy and using DoD FLIP and NACO pubs my entire career, can somebody direct me to a source for learning the nuances of the Jepp plates?

Thanks guys. Have most of you completed your 60 hours of home study all at once? I mean, take a week of leave, study full time then go right to the sim, or did you spread it out over several weeks, and then go sim?

Tytl - Don't bother burning leave to get the 60 hrs of study done. Make sure you know the 160 or so questions for the pre-test. That is the wicket to start class......if you fail you don't start. Once you master the pre-test, study what you can.

EPs, Limits, and systems in that order IMHO. Listen to the sytems tape/CD a couple of times........that is a good representation of the oral.

I just finished at HPA, great place. They know how to keep you motivated. If you learn the flow on the CD-ROM and the test you will be way ahead of your class.

The only negative thing I would say is my sim instructor had his own flow for you to learn. It was called How to KISS the 737. I got his info the 2nd week and already had HPA’s flows memorized. Most of his stuff had a better flow to it but it wasn’t what HPA had given me. I am not there to change HPA they know what they are doing and they do a great job of doing it. Right or wrong I only want one set of flows to know it would have made it easier the first couple of days in the sim.

HPA’s ground instructors were great. They all were on the same page as far as the training goes. But I believe that HPA contracts out on the sim stuff so it may be hard to standardize all instructors especially the ones who want to do things their way. I passed just the same and had a great time and I would recommend HPA to anyone. If you or anyone else wants the KISS manual let me know I will send it to you.
 
I went to K&S and was taught SWA flows. My sim instructor was employed by K&S, not a contract guy. He was a retired SWA captain. There was no confusion as to what the flows were. My plug is for K&S. Class sizes are small, max of six people. They run multiple classes concurrently to keep class sizes small.

The course was $7,380. when I did it last year, it is approved for the GI Bill and WIA funding, my GI Bill reimbursed me for 60% of the course. It is a B-737 Type Rating and ATP course, housing is not included, will run about $600. for 15 days at comfort suites about a mile from the school and they will shuttle you back and forth.

If you want a 737 type or need an ATP, Higher Power Aviation is the place to get it. It's a great school and a great bunch of people down there, they will do whatever you need to get you through the program, lots of people weren't able to do the whole two weeks at one time so they will let you break the course up however you need to in order to complete it.

HPA training

I finished HPA in Jan. Want to echo what everyone else said. It's a great place full of great people who give you great training. Just wanted to add you get a Unrestricted 737 type rating and you're qualified as a Captain. If you go to a place other than HPA, make sure you don't get a restricted type rating if you're interested in SWA.
For lodging, Amerisuites is within walking distance of HPA and they have a special deal for HPA students--$40 a night with a free breakfast. Good workout facility. Also, a free shuttle to HPA if you're like me and too lazy to walk.
