Thanks guys for the response to my previous question. Now when I fly the multi engine airplane to the airport to take my checkride (100 miles away), how do I log that time? I am not rated in the airplane, so I know I cannot log PIC...Any suggestions? Thanks!!

PIC, sole manipulator. There is no other way to log it. Solo is PIC.

How did you log your solo XC's when you were getting your private?

Well back in my private days (1996), My instructor told me to make a seperate column in my logbook for "solo" time. I think they might have changed the regs sometime ago 97, 98??? about logging solo and pic time.

I just went over this FAR today during a ground lesson. That time can be logged as solo and PIC since you will be the sole occupant of the aircraft:

FAR 61.51

(d) Logging of solo flight time. Except for a student pilot performing the duties of pilot in command of an airship requiring more than one pilot flight crewmember, a pilot may log as solo flight time only that flight time when the pilot is the sole occupant of the aircraft.
(e) Logging pilot-in-command flight time.

(1) A sport, recreational, private, or commercial pilot may log pilot-in-command time only for that flight time during which that person—
(i) Is the sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which the pilot is rated or has privileges;
(ii) Is the sole occupant of the aircraft; or
(iii) Except for a recreational pilot, is acting as pilot in command of an aircraft on which more than one pilot is required under the type certification of the aircraft or the regulations under which the flight is conducted.

1997. The FAA did a major revision of Part 61. This was part of it.

How will the insurance folks feel about this?!
Yeah I haven't heard of this being done.

I mean if you can't solo in the traffic pattern during your training, then why would it be ok to fly a cross country ?

Where I fly, there are no insurance mins for a multi. All you need is an instructor's signoff/checkout. I am sure they pay a hefty premium, but it is nice being able to take a duchess to the Bahamas with only 50 hours tt.

The industry (insurance) seems to be moving towards more risk to get more premium.

I don't know whether it's good or not (in the long run), but it's certainly nice being able to solo a Seminole (or other light twin) after a simple 1.2 checkout.
