I am a former SkyWest captain who left 18 months ago to be a stay at home dad and have met some VFR only guys around the local airport that need a day pilot to tag along on their business missions once in a while when the wx sucks, their equipment ranges from C-210 to Piper Navajo but all are VFR only guys. I have maybe 1 day every other week to spare and want to provide day pilot services to these folks, do any of you have any experience with this? How much to charge? I was thinking like $500 per day?

Day rate for a CRJ pilot (SIC) is around 600. That is what we pay. It depends on type of aircraft and if the company pays for expenses or not.

I'd say $500/day is reasonable considering your experience. That's only slightly above the day rate the 400 series twin guys are making.

You should ask this question on the Corporate board.

If you charge $500/day to babysit in a SE or ME piston, you probably won't get much work unless you're one hell of a salesman and/or people get in a pinch...King Air PICs often only get $400-500/day with NYC or California being somewhat higher.

Depends,
You pitchin' or catchin'?

I don't think you're going to get paid a whole lot for something as informal as this seems to be. Be sure you're a named insured on their policies and see what they had in mind paying first. Sounds like a good way to keep your hand in flying, especially if you want to go back to it at some point in the future.

I manage both a BE-58 for a part 91 owner pilot and BE-200 with the proline 21 on a current 135 certificate for a 91 owner. I pay 350/day for the baron and 750 for the king air. The flying is with the owner, who is rated and flightsafety current on both airplanes. I have flown for the owner for the last 6 years, but in the event I cant make the trip, I find a contract pilot to fill the slot. PM me for any details, will be glad to help you out.
