I have a comair interview coming up and God willing I get a job offer, How bad/expensive is living in NY/jfk for 19k a year? I have been looking at crash pad prices etc. and I just don't see how folks do it in less than $1600 a month. I mean $1600 is too much for food stamps but not enough to eat on....wtf? And how much do the crashpads run close to the airport now that you only have 1 and half hour to get there?

Oh yea this not a comair or (insert regional here) bashing....

seems like crashpads run $200 - $250/month. How do new guys afford it? Man, I don't know. I know we have a fair number of people who live in Ops, but that's no solution.

On the plus side, some new hires have been getting CVG/GSO/even MCO (from a Dec class, but that's a fluke). There's a lot of movement lately and unless attrition suddenly slows down, you may not be stuck in JFK.

Sell drugs, you can always make a good cut after your overhead for items like a scanner, little bagies, a gun, bullet proof vest, a cool pair of italian shoes, a beater car and a hoe. Come on man get with it.

Also, I believe the call out time in JFK is 2 hours instead of the regular 1.5.

well that helps out a lot. I never really realized how important .50 is when tryin to get somewhere within a set time.

Is $250 avg. or kind of luck if you can find it? I would like to live near ny but I also like to eat and not sleep in meth lab either...lol

Mco would be a blessing or even gsp and cvg, but I am kindda planning for the worst (financially). I am not that nieve...lol

How long is resrv. for new guys lasting now?

I realize I have to get the job before I can start beatching about it. I can't go into this all stupid and look back an wish I had worn a rubber...um I meant thought things through!!

Am I the only one? Dude you have to live with lots of people and that is how it would be 250 a month. If you are on your own it would be 1600. I lived by myself for 1500 a month. I dated this girl and sold her out front the apt two nights a week that is all it took to make some nice coin.

From what it looks like, not many guys are sitting reserve up there. Sure you're on reserve, but you're month is already full of open time trips. Guys are commuting for their trips. if you're line works out right, you can commute in and out on the days of your trips.

Heard some who live there full-time do so up in CT and NJ for cheaper than on Long Island. I'll be crash-padding it once I reluctantly leave MCO. Though, with the growth up there, they've gotta do something with ops, it's a mess now without all the recent bid awards. If it gets better, I may do the ops commute like in the old days at CVG.

have you ever heard of long island.. i had a place 20 min from jfk for 125. a week..

When, back in the 70's? You can't even find a crappy crash pad for that now. Unless you make about 150K per year, you can't afford to buy a place anywhere near JFK. Rent for an average 1 bedroom apt within a 1.5-2 hour callout will run you around $1100. Crashpads go from $200-$250 in Queens. Most come with about 16 guys in a small three bedroom apartment. Great living!

20 minutes walking? Bike Ride? In traffic? without traffic?

I will build a teleport machine to get myself to JFK before I give in and move there.

Plus, guys are only going to JFK for a couple months then going to CVG. I just had a guy in my class (dec 7) get awarded MCO

I lived there about 5 years ago. Had a crashpad for $200 a month in Kew Gardens (Queens). Half way in between JFK and LaGuardia. Seems like most of the pilots and FA from all airlines live in that area. 9 dollar cab ride or cheap bus ride which takes about thirty minutes. Would do it again if I had to.

I wil never understand as to why anyone would take a job, or even like to live in the new york metro area! That place is and always will be a SH*T HOLE!!!! Taking a job for 19K is one thing but living in that dump of a city is another.

I guess all 8 million of us that live here haven't figured that out yet!

Did your Uncle touch you in a bad place at the family trip to the Empire State Building?

MUUUUUAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! that's good. Actually it was my ex, and it was gooooood! she did it while I ate a gyro....mmmm, good times

I lived by myself in Newport KY down by the Levee on first year pay and my rent was 500 so I'm sure you can make 250 work. Sucks you have to live with 10+ people but I hear no more than a few are around at a time. Plus you really don't need a car with some of the pads that are close to the Airtrain or employee parking. I haven't had a car in almost a year living in BOS and saved several thousand dollars already. JFK is still a real problem for new hires though. They can't staff it because as soon as other vacancies open, all the NH's bail. There have been 75+ FO vacancies in JFK for 6 months at least. But just remember, as a NH in CVG you'll do all your flying out of JFK because of this shortage. Good luck whatever you do paid4training.
