My son is exploring the his options for paying for flight school. He is trying the traditional lenders, (ie, SallieMae.) If anyone has had good luck getting financing somewhere other than these places he and I would be very grateful for the information.

The problem that we are anticipating is that because I own a small business I will probably not be able to cosign for him. We had tried that last year. (I don't really understand that either). He is 24 yoa and has not established any credit. The school that he will be attending is our local FBO's flight school.

Thanks Very Much

Credit

Your son should try to apply for some local credit cards, i.e. department stores, etc. or gas credit cards. After one company issues a card, they all do.

That worked for me when I was young. I applied for a bank card and was turned down. I then explained that I had held a checking account since I was 16 and was employed. The bank issued a card to me with a $500 credit limit. That was all I needed. I applied for gas cards, etc. and never had any problem thereafter.

Hope that helps.

local flight school should be able to help, i.e. "Cessna Pilot Center" or whatever...I don't think they're that concerned about credit. You can also enroll him at a community college (or some other local school) that does aviation training, as a part time student, and this will allow him to take advantage of school loans (Perkins, Stafford, Pell Grant)???

Thanks

Thank you both - they are good ideas - especially the community college!!!

Look into AvScholars.com . Perhaps he will be able to apply for something there. In addition. AOPA gives scholarships for flight training as does the EAA.

Where are you and what is the FBO charging?
