Would including something in your aol profile to the effect of:

Hobbies: Commercial pilot

Be considered holding out?

you're not advertising a service. You're stating the fact that you're a commercial pilot.

sounds like an achievement, not a means of obtaining passenger traffic from the general public...they even say if you are gaining a reputation to "serve all" it can be considered 'holding out'

correct me if I am wrong

sell your services

You can sell your services as a comm pilot to someone who has the authority to hold out, you just need to complete his apporaved training program and be added to his approved list of qualifed pilots. If you engaged in service from point A to point B for compensation on your own, you with be in violation and be guilty of "holding out" or engaging in air commerce without operating authority.
