It looks like a very complicated snow sistem at NE u.s.a , whos flying in this areas, I personaly have no experience flying with snow, how dangerous is it realy, and tell us how was it tonight, tomorow, tuesday! how will and how did it go. what are the plans

Flying a 172 in the snow, the biggest concern is a/c icing. the landing and snow covered runway is not really a big deal. the snow will make for a softer landing and slow the a/c on roll out.
In a big jet, you have wing anti iceing. Meaning they are usually heated with bleed air from the engines. The landings can be tricky because of the speed involved however the thrust reversers help to slow the a/c. I will be flying all day tomorrow in the north east.

Commander,

I do believe some of the bigger airports have heated runways. The runway temperature only has to be slightly higher than the ambient temperature for the ice to go away, don't know about snow.

Heated runways???

Heated runways eh? I'm not sure about that one. But if they did, wouldn't the runway temperature have to be above 0 C to rid the runway of any frozen precipitation?
In my experience, larger airports use: plows, brooms (sweeping trucks), sand, urea and other freeze-point depressing chemicals to maintain a contamination free surface.
As intruiging as heated runways are, I imagine that coming up with a system to heat an entire runway would not be cost effective-not to mention the enormous engineering problems such an endeavour would incur.

I find it funny that the FAA makes it clear that "frost having the consistancy of sandpaper will kill you" But every time i see a plane with frost, i hear" Ahh its just a little frost!

Heated Runways? Heated Runways? Is that what he said? Say it ain't so!

You mean like they got at Lambeau Field? Sweet!

Where can I get me one of those for my driveway?

After further research I stand by my claim. They are heated SOLAR HEATED

Flame away.

MINI, Just make the wife blow on the driveway.

Flame away just might work better...

Well......
I guess that makes all black asphault/bitumen paved runways "solar heated".
.........and all powered aircraft "Solar Powered" since jet fuel comes from crude oil, which was originally plant matter that produced carbohydrate "fuel" from photosynthesis which requires sunlight!

And that makes me a vegetarian, since cows eat grass.

I've five legs tomorrow. Yipee! Call me crazy, but, I'm actually looking forward to it. I feel like I am really working for my money when the weather gets bad. I pointed this out to an attorney at a party once. He was saying that pilots were over paid. I laughed at him and told him that any good salesperson could make more money by selling plastic widgets, and, when was the last time someone died from a bad widget. He actually agreed with me. Take care!

actually, your hydrogen/fusion powered, since that grass the cow ate, grew from sunlight, which was created in that star up there, so techincally, 'everything' is fusion powered

of course, could go deeper than that, start including the "weak gravitational forces" and the like but this isn't a cosmology thread lol

Well no flying for me yet , but I did had a great time making snowmans :) , would have prefered to be flying, but not yet I guess.

You must not have ever thrown powder in front of the airplane so you end up with a whiteout on ldg roll........first time I did that, I thought I had, to quote a great flightinfo term, "punched a grumpy" in my pants.

I prefer to make my money and not have to fly with slush/ice/snow contaminated rwys. I still feel like I earn my money either way...I lose a lot less hair by avoiding adverse terminal conditions as much as possible. Sure they build experience, but I hate having to go "all in" unless I have to, and try not to ever let a situation get to that.

I know that in Europe they are trying to heat the runways due to the huge fog problems they have. Funny part is that it looks like they ain't so far away from reaching their goal. Oh well, we'll see...

I worked on a rich dudes house when i did landscaping and they installed a heated driveway (driveway was crushed limestone...so you couldnt shovel or plow it). I'm sure it costs a crapload of cash.

Heard mention of heated runway in Maine from a Regional guy. I believe it was a joint civil/military base. Don't know of the validity though.

Other than that I've never heard of one. Usually they are plowed, broomed, salted, sanded, chemically treated, or ignored.

Didnt some of the old bases have heated runways? - hot air ducted under the entire runway?

Portsmouth NH maybe?

Some hangars and ramps have heated surfaces also. No slipping and sliding when walking to the plane!!

Nice!

I fly into KEF every other week, doesn't ever look heated to me. Or maybe that was the reason for the 300Meters in fog I landed at the other day.
