Thanks for your post about why you will not get hired. I really enjoyed it.
I was wondering if you could tell me about why airlines are going to the latest trend of setting up application agreements with online sites such as: AirlineApps.com, Aeps, etc.
I really, really do not like going through a third source like a website. Further, there seem to be glitches in these websites, such as automatically adding your flight time (and it often ends up to be incorrect). Then, when you try to get technical support for a simple thing such as improper addition of flight time, it ends up to be a long maze to find tech support email. Then you have a wait a long time for an answer and you better hope it's the right answer otherwise it's another 3 week wait. In the meantime, these webistes seem to be getting wealthy by milking away my money (which I don't have to much of). Do the airlines get some type of kickback from these sites? ... as I cannot really see much advantage of going this way. Oh yeah, out off all the positions available on these sites, I only got one phone call after a year of using these sites for First Officer positions in which I exceeded hiring requirements.

Why can't the airlines just go back to posting an email address? It would make it a lot easier for a Joe 6 Pack like me and save me some money!!! Can I get an "Amen"?

Time consuming tasks

E-mail application makes it easy to screen a candidate before going through the effort of scheduling an interview. I believe it nearly eliminates shoppers, you the ones who set you a resume and I used to call them, the conversation would go something like this "Hi USA Jet Airlines here, answer "Who?" response "USA Jet in Detroit, you sent us a resume." answer "I did? well anyway how about telling me about USA Jet Airlines". You get the picture. Not to mention pilots out there who have call screening on their telephones. That results in an automatic hang up. Before on-line apps, we would schedule approximately 4 interviews for every pilot put into the pool, now it is down near 2 interviews per pilot in the pool. The on-line application saves a lot of non-productive effort and puts the ball squarely in court of the pilot trying to get an interview.

The airlines that use these systems might not want to set them up on their own. It requires an IT staff to handle the site and if they're hiring once every 3 years for example, they can't keep hiring and firing the staff. It is best for them to contract it out to a third party.

They also use the sites rather than snail mailed resumes because they can rapidly search the database. I need a pilot with a minimum of 2000hrs TT / 500hrs ME that lives in Grand Rapids, MI that has a Citation type. Click, click, click and up come the results.

I've heard that its illegal to charge residents of Calif for example, from paying for job applications. Does that work with these sites too?

Vik and Yip are correct. The cost for having these systems in-house is not feasible for many companies. Many companies are outsourcing this type of function, not just aviation. The most common I have seen lately are companies that hire a third party to do their initial telephone screen. However, those candidates are not paying for the "priviledge" of applying. That is pretty unique to aviation.

Why they are having the candidate pay is probably because the companies are not paying OR they are not paying a huge amount. As long as candidates pay, there is no reason for them to change the system. I am not saying it is right, but just telling you the reality. However, this is one big catch-22 for the candidate; do not apply and pay the money, no job offer with that company. It stinks!
