When i took my FC1 the first time I was called back to take another cholesterol test. I was told it was "higher than what the AF likes to see". Anything over 200 and you need to come back. I had 224. I retook it a week later and it was 199. Today, 7 months later, I tested myself with some kit I bought at Walgreens and it was 234. I'm off to OTS in Nov and SUPT soon thereafter. Is this something that could get me in trouble at Brooks or OTS? Any of you guys ever have to deal with high cholesterol?

Me too

When I took my FC1 (got the results by the way and thankfully I passed!) I was told by the opthamologist, of all people, that he thought I had high cholesterol. I asked him what he was talking about and he said that there is some correlation b/w a white ring of lippids around the iris of the eye (no harm to the eye) and high cholesterol. He turned to his computer to see if my lab work was back yet and sure enough my count was 236. I was worried because I knew it was high but he did'nt think it was a DQ.

When I got my FC1 back the other day and it said my count was 199. I don't know if he pulled up the wrong file or was reading the wrong number but after reading your post I'm glad he was wrong. I had a brief discussion with the opthomologist and he mentioned he has had a history of high cholesterol and the only thing that work for him were Statin drugs (eg. Lipitor.) He said there are no side effects from them and the AF pays. I don't know if they care if you take them but before or during UPT but I'm considering looking into it. Good luck and I'm glad it turned out ok.

I dunno much about the whole thing. (However, that has never stopped me from having an opinion on just about everything.) If I were in your shoes, I'd go to a doctor and see about a cholesterol lowering diet. I would not take any prescription medications though. I think that would throw up a red flag at MFS.

Mine has been high since I've been in, always way over 200. They look at a ratio of total Cholesterol to the HDL or good cholesterol. If its the proper ratio, you don't have to worry.

If you are prone to it, the only thing that helps lower total cholesterol are the drugs. Excercise brings up the good cholesterol levels to lower the ratio.

My numbers were always very high.....240 to 250, and the LDL and HDL ratio were never what my doc wanted. He prescribed the drug Lipitor. 1 tablet a day in the morning. That was 4 years ago. Ever since, my count is always around 170, and the LDL HDL ratio is good. Can't say enough good stuff about Lipitor. Also, I eat what I want!

I have high Cholesterol aswell. It was pretty high when I had my FC1 last year for the guard- 243 actually. Basically because of genes along with a bad diet and inactivity because my girlfriend was battling Cancer. I had 2 months to get it down and with some working out and a decent diet I brought it down to 183. That wasn't it though I was taking some over the counter herbs and stuff. I high reccommend it because I think it's what really saved my a*s.

Flaxseed oil (as mentioned)
Kyolic Odorless Garlic
Ginger root
Green Tea
Niacin
Regular daily Vitamins
Cholester-off...nature's made brand

and I think thats it. The guys at my wing recommended the flaxseed oil and Garlic, the rest of the stuff I found out about on the internet. Good Luck

Flax seed oil is good stuff. It is the most potent source of omega fatty acids available and really helps your good/bad cholesterol ratio. Also, it inhibits the buildup of lactic acid in your muscles, so you're less sore from working out and you recover quicker. I use the actual oil (as opposed to the capsules) and mix it in with a protien shake every morning.

Where can I get flakseed oil and those garlic pills?

My blood work for my FC1 came back and my cholesterol was 245! I exercise sporadically but consider my diet to be better than the average 'joe'. I spoke with my Father about it and he said that his count was about the same and that it is probably hereditary.

Will this DQ me from my FC1? A little freaked out here!

Flax seed oil can be purchased at most health food stores. A 16 oz. bottle will cost you about $15. You're supposed to take about 1 tablespoon for every 100 lbs. of body weight.

Garlic pills can also be purchased at health food stores, or any grocery store. I guess Garlique is supposed to be the best.

I was taking flaxseed oil and recently discovered a blend of EFS (essential fatty acids) called Udo's Choice. My Dad is a licensed pharmacist and works for a vitamin manufacture and when I asked him about udo's he said it was good stuff. It has flax in it but it also contains a more uniform blend of other important sources of EFAs, as well as balancing them. It will definitely help (probably better then just flaxseed.) It is a high quality product so expect to pay about anywhere from $20-35 for a 32oz (which should last about a month or so if taken everyday) you can also buy it in smaller quantities if you wanted. You should take a tablespoon per 50lbs of body weight (broken up into different times of the day.) It is a well researched product and I have been taking it for about two weeks now and have already noticed an increase in overall energy, less of an apatite, and have lost a considerable amount of weight (11lbs --however I don't attribute that all to the udo's stuff.) If you decide to take just flax make sure you spend the money to get a quality product (preferably something USDA certified organic.) As mentioned earlier a healthy diet with a moderate amount of exercise should greatly help lower your cholesterol (probably better then any prescription med and it will definitely be much more healthy.) I hope it all works out for you!

BTW--search google for Udo's choice to read about it (I don't think I can post a link because it would be considered too "promotional" for this board.)
