Hello everyone,

Can someone tell me if the route between Texas (probably Brownsville) and Cancun requires an HF radio? I know what the FARS say about 30 minute comm gaps on VHF but do not know if this route would meet those requirements or if I need to get an HF radio. If I do need one does anybody know if there are portable HF radios on the market?

Nope. Flew it twice last week. VHF all the way.

Fly across the gulf to Cancun or Cozumel very regularly. From Houston or New Orleans. Its VHF all the way. Now I am doing it in Lears, but have done it in King Airs and Metros. Still VHF with no problems. If communications problems do occur, most pilots who regularly fly in that area will relay a position report for you.
