Hey what’s up everyone I have been out flying my rear off!! I get a few days break at home then I get to go have some more fun. I now get to learn about flying in Central and South America. When you get south of Mexico it seems like info is a bit harder to dig up.



Anyone have any good web sources for Central and South America procedures?


I aware of Mexico but south of there is where I keep running in to dead ends.

I don’t really know what you are asking for, but thanks to our friends at EUROCONTROL and the FAA here is a useful link.

Most Countries do not have an English option on their respected web site, so you will have to translate them through Google.

The info tab on the far right is the FAA info page. I sent the link opened to South America and you will see North, Central and Caribbean in the drop down list on the left.

Some critical points in dealings South of the border...

Many controllers will let you do whatever you want, which means they'll let you fly right into an active volcano, or descend to 8,000' off an airway in an Grid MORA area labeled 14,500'. Ask and ye shall recieve, but it's on your head.

MEA's, MOCA's, MORA's, and all those other altitude related numbers are your friends.

Deviate from a published routing when low at your own risk, and even then I'll go MORA + 2,000' Get back on the routing ASAP. Those grid MORA's are NOT 100% accurate by any means.

Talk in plain English... ex.

BAD: "Yeah Cenamer, there's a pretty large system of cells South of us for, uhh, about 80 miles, wonderin' how guys are getting through."

GOOD: "Cenamer, request heading one six zero for weather, then direct APTAT" You'll get "Royer, approved as requested."

Don't ask for ride reports. For some reason it doesn't work. They won't help you. 123.45 is your friend and please make use of it.

Plenty of Volcanos. Check for ash before and during flight unless you enjoy such encounters.

Finally, PLEASE, Do NOT call Merida control by any of the following names: Meridian, Mer-EYE-da, Mer-EE-da, Merdian, etc. It's Mare-i-da, short i. And don't say adios to the controllers, it sounds stupid, if you must use Spanish say "Buenos Dias" or "Tardes", whatever. ;)

Otherwise, enjoy. You can go 1200NM with 2 or 3 frequency changes max; very little chatter. Generally good weather except for storms over the Yucatan. No snow. Pack a swimsuit, T-shirt, and flip flops for the Caribbean. Belize has the cheapest duty free.

1. Take an international course. (I cannot stress this high enough.)

2. Use an international handler such as Universal, Base Ops, etc. it doesn't matter who.

3. Take a large amount of small dollar bills such as ones, fives, tens.

4. DO NOT attempt to speak the local language on ATC unless you are very fluent in such language. It is perfectly alright to sign off with the local language if you know the phrase. However, never, never use a language you are not fluent with on initial call up with ATC.

5. Learn and obey the local laws and customs and you will have a surprisingly good time.

I tried to fly in after a Hurricane to get my grandfather out of the area. The only Notams I got from SOCAL were this: No WX, or other info available for Mexico... :( Good luck ans afe flying!
 
Its more challenging flying south of the border than your usual DSM to MSN.....Nothing but cornfields!!
