Does a C-130H have a partial glass EFIS system? I have seen pics of the "J" models, and they look pretty sweet. I wasn't sure if a newer "H" would still have steam gages.

If anyone has any info on the C-130 and life as a Guard Herc pilot I would appreciate the incite.

C-130H3s (year models 92+) do have partial glass EFIS. The ADI, HSI, VSI/TCAS, and Radar/SKE display are all glass. The engine instruments are all "steam", but some are digital LCD. The H3 has a very nice user friendly (and NVG friendly) cockpit, but the J is a generation ahead- if they've gotten all the bugs worked out.

They're still working the bugs out. We get a lot of false ACAWS (Caution) messages. There are two mission computers. The acft is supposed to be able to function well without one. It doesn't function as well as we'd like it to. The FMS requires a lot of button-pushing. Not nearly as user-friendly as my CRJ.

It's a new system, though. Just like any other the bugs are still being ironed out. Still, they delivered it to our squadron without all the testing being completed. We can't use it for hurricane flying yet, all our tasked storm missions go to the H. The radar won't hack it for our mission. Granted, that's unique to our squadron so it's not an airframe-wide problem. I've not been very active in the J program these past few months since it is storm season. Our dedicated J folks have been working hard with Lockheed to get the aircraft right.

Sorry about the stream-of-conciousness rambling. I'm sure there's a J guy/gal or two on this board who could elaborate much more eloquently than I.

I saw the inside of one of those j's at Baltimore, pretty awesome. It looks like a c130 from the outside, but up front, its a whole different animal. I'm an H3 guy and we have the "glass hsi and adi, also a radar /ski scope screen for each pilot but its nothing like "real glass" it may as well be a hardball airplane.

Yeah its pretty awesome on the ground at 0 kts GS... but you'd find a different adjective for sure 1 min inside the IP when the Nav computer locks up... Or 150 nm off the gulf coast when one of your props comes apart in a hurricane...

Was that a NAV rooting for the J!!! Life is good in the H3 with the 241 and flir etc, you should want them to build more of those....

No, not rooting for the J, just not wanting to write a novel on a couple of the problems that Senor' Spur touched on. I'm off to fly the J Saturday down in the direction of Mizz Isabella, who's churning toward us as we type. We're not yet flying the J into hurricanes but are using it for support and some other stuff that doesn't put it into any heavy stuff. It will one day be a good airplane but it does need some work.

Life is good in the H3 with the 241 and flir etc, you should want them to build more of those....

Believe me now and hear me later; there are a whole bunch of folks in my squadron who'd LOVE to have a ramp full of H3s!!!!

I'm hoping to Palace Chase into the 53rd one of these days...when and if they change the rules as rumored (1 year of commitment must be done instead of 2/3s). Word has it that the USAF produced a few too many LT's in the late 90s and early 2000's, and there's no way they can all pin on Major come 2005-2006 time frame.

My plan is to do one tour in the Herk and apply. I'll be at the 2/3 point then anyways....but that's 3 years down the road...maybe you'll have the J up and running as it's supposed to by then.

It's never too early to start calling and getting your name in the hat. We don't deploy to the Middle East and don't have the all the currencies that make a TAC unit so time consuming. We're full up on pilots and the pounding at the door is deafening. That being said, who knows what manning will be in three years and the slots go to folks who've shown an interest and kept in touch. We've already hired a nav who initially contacted me through this board.

The J is supposed to be up and running in three years but no one in the squadron is turning purple from holding his breath until it happens.

I plan on applying after my ADSC for the initial Herk training expires. I've got about 9 months left here at Maxwell in the C-21 before I head to Little Rock for the C-130 schoolhouse. I'll be down at Keesler in a couple weeks attending the C-21 Instructor Pilot Qual course, so I plan on walking over and talking to a few folks while I'm there.

I had almost 8 years with the LA Army National Guard (enlisted/warrant officer time) prior to going AD AF, so I'm not too interested in putting 20 years on active duty. I'd rather go back to the Guard/Reserves and finish out there. My wife is from Louisiana and we both like the Gulf Coast area, so the 53rd is a perfect place for a future Herk driver to go to. I've got a total of about 12 years right now since I first enlisted as an E-1, and if it's a unit like the 53rd that doesn't require long deployments to the Middle East, I'll probably stay as long as the job remains fun.

If you're going to be around Keesler the first couple weeks of October, I'll be over at the 45th AS. I wouldn't mind getting the chance to meet some of the 53rd people and see the airplanes.
 
Any word on when the -J model schoolhouse at Keesler is going to open?

The sim is up and running. Don't think there'll be any aircraft training here, though. I think it'll all end up at "The Rock" before long, anyway.
 
They're hoping for classes to start at LR in the spring.
The Keesler sim tanked the FAA Cert, from what I understand.
