Doc Martens in either the classic shoe style, or ankle boot. Can't go wrong with either design and they won't beep because the shank is wood and not metal.
I have been wearing Deer Stags for the past couple months and they have never once set off a detector either here or in Europe. They don't have any metal in the heel. You should be able to find them in most of the pilot supply shops such as the Flight Station.
I'm on my second pair. The first pair lasted me a little over year, and the second is still going strong after about 6 months. A year isn't all that long, but if you were them for 12 hours a day for 15-20 days a month, it's not that bad. They polish up real nice with Kiwi too.
Florsheim Comfortechs...no beeps, comfortable, and made it through two winters of anti-iced ramps with no problem. But I agree, Deer Stags are comfortable too...and a little cheaper.
If you have any friends in the military, get them to pick you up a pair of military "low quarter" shoes. They cost about 50 bucks are of very high qulaity and most important of all...they don't beep.
I saw General Lee in Atlanta the other day and he did look very comfortable in his Eccos. Nevertheless, for boot-wearers among us, I highly recommend the Aviat Heritage Ropers. I bought mine last year. They are extremely comfortable and they look great. Be sure that you ask your dealer for the model with the composite shank.
Anyone else have problems with blisters wearing the Deer Stags? Right on the heel. They're broken in now, and feel great, but those first few days....ouch.
i musta gotten a bum pair of deer stags. not only did they take at least a week of walking around with blisters on my heel, breaking them in, but they set off the detectors every single time i walked through them. not all at the same airport, either, so it wasn't just super sensitive machines at one spot, or anything like that.
now that they're 3 months old, the cloth inside of the left heel is worn off, and down to pure plastic scraping my heel again, now that the blister is completely healed.
I found a pair of Kenneth Cole's that don't beep and every pair of KC's I've had have lasted a long time, plus they look pretty good. I don't know if I would allow myself to go into a JCPenny's to see if they had them there but I know they have them at Nordstroms
I wear Skechers. They make a model called Phenomenon. At least I think those are the ones I bought. They are marketed as airport friendly. There is a stamp on the box and a tag on the shoes stating that they are airport friendly. No metal in them, but still have the soft rubber soles.
Just go into a Skecher store and ask for the airport friendly black shoes. I got them at Horton plaza in SAN on an overnight for $50 or so. The girl asked me if I worked at the airport or something, as many pilots and flight attendants have been coming in for them. They come in a lace up model and a slip on one too.
