My P-3 shipmate asked me:

I'm confused as to what counts toward PIC & total time wrt airlines when doing military to civilian translation.Need an answer for the below scenario involving two sample log entries from my logbook:
6 Sep 82
First Pilot: 3.5 hours
Second Pilot: 3.5 Hours
Special Crew: 3.5 Hours

7 Sep 83
First Pilot: 3.5 hours
Second Pilot: 3.5 hours
Special Crew: 3.5 hours
Aircraft Commander: 10.5 hours

What I took from the ARINC seminar this past weekend, I can count the 10.5 hours as PIC time in the second entry.

Therefore, two questions remain:

1. Would the 3.5 hours of First Pilot Time in the 6 Sep 80 entry count toward PIC if I am rated in the Aircraft even though I did not sign for the aircraft?

2. Does the A/C commander time all count toward total flight hours. In other words for the two examples would the total pilot time be: 7.0 hours (6 Apr) + 10.5 hours (7 Apr) = 17.5 total hours. Or, can I only count 7.0 hours each day as that what was logged for FP & CP Time?

Thanks for your help.

Hi!

First, realize that the airlines count time different ways. For example, some count your mil time 1.3:1, others 1.2:1, others 1:1.

Most, especially the bigger employers, ONLY count PIC when U SIGN for the aircraft. It doesn't matter if you're actually flying the plane or not.

The guy who signs for the plane gets PIC. The guy sitting right seat (or flying in either seat, & who did NOT sign for the plane) gets SIC time.

If U are in the back, you get NO time (unless you're the guy who signed for the plane, then ALL of it is PIC).

Most of the above airlines don't even count solo time! If you're solo, you're under the supervision of an IP and it is student time, not PIC!

Also, if there's an instructor or stan/eval guy who signed for the plane, they get PIC and you get SIC.
