my wife has a current instrument AGI. she also has an expired lasergrade test report for her FIA. she is working on finally upgrading to a CFI. i told her since she has the AGI, she doesn't have to worry about ANY written tests...including the FIA. she thinks i'm smoking crack. i sent an email off to AOPA, but while waiting for their answer, i'm hoping someone here knows the answer right off.
thank you all kindly.

You are smoking crack. She needs the FIA.

She doesn't have to take the FOI again, which is what you might be thinking of.

ok....the FIA and AGI are the same test...i wonder why they would make her take "the same test" twice. anyway, thank you for you quick reply

It is kind of a racket, but if per say you had a IGI and wanted to get a CFII you still have to take the CFII test even though it is the same as the IGI exam.

And it's not an upgrade, the AGI and the CFI are separate certificates.

A flight instructor applicant needs to learn to read the regulations, and understand them.

A ground instructor certificate is just that; a ground instructor certificate. It's not pilot certificate, it's not a flight instructor certificate. It's a ground instructor certificate. One does not "upgrade" a ground instructor certificate to a flight instructor certificate. Your wife intends to obtain a new certificate.

14 CFR 61.183(e)(1) authorizes your wife to forgo the Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI), as she already holds a ground instructor certificate.

However, 61.183(f) provides that your wife must still pass a knowledge exam on "aeronautical knowledge areas for a recreational, private, and commercial pilot certificate applicable to the aircraft category for which flight instructor privileges are sought," which translates to the fact that she needs to take the Flight Instructor Airplane knowlege exam.

Looks like you're on crack after all.
