Anybody use the Telex 850 in the 737? How does it work and do you need to have the intercom switch on to power the headset or does it get power even if you don't have the intercom switch held open?

I wish I had the answer. I tried to find out if the 850 would work cold-mike, ie the IC switch not rubber-banded to the rear. I asked the same thing here and it was inconclusive.

The UFlyMike + Bose QC2: So far, VERY nice.

I use the telex 850 and it works pretty well... The mic is always powered becasue the CVR still used the boom mike input to record voice.

'They are light and confortable but with out an intercom I normally fly along with the inside ear open so I can talk to the other guy. It seems that most guys use a earmold set up but I really cant stand having something in my ear.

I just started using the 850 in a 757. The noise reduction works good and the headset is very comfortable. My only complaint is I don't think the acoustic quality is as good as the Sennheiser. I've never owned the Sennheiser but have borrowed them a couple of times and I think they had better sound clarity.

I have one and I don't think it works very well. (in the 737) I wouldn't buy it again or recommend it. You wanna buy mine?

It allows for clearer ATC, but doesn't seems to make the cockpit any quieter for me.

Yes, it works without hotmike.

I went through the same decision making process recently and went with the 850. So far I am very pleased. I chose it because with a lack of intercom on the 737, one way or the other one ear will have to be uncovered to hear the other pilot. The 850 is light enough and comfortable enough that this isn't as bad as I thought it would be. When you don't need to talk to the other pilot, ie. quiet cruise legs, the ANR does a good job reducing wind noise. You don't need batteries as it works just fine in the mike jack as long as the switch is in the normal "boom" and not "mask". Finally, its small size doesn't take up too much room in my already full flight kit.
