after searching 2 years for the right school, I finally get to start lessons in september. I've started looking at headsets and I would like to get a nice ANR, but don't know what to look for. I live in a rual area now, so I'm having to search on the internet. This makes things really difficult because I don't know how the headset is going to fit. I have a smaller head (more of a skinny face) so can anyone recomend a brand or specific headset I should look for. I'm moving to Houston in a couple of weeks, so if anyone knows of a local supply store that headsets it would be a huge help.

Thanks in advance

there's a place called the aviator shop in webster TX, over by ellington field off I-45 S (scarsdale exit). they have a lot of headsets in stock but they are about 20-30% more expensive than internet or mail order. Try them on there and then order one off the net. I use a bose headset, I have flown 1500 hours with it and have had NO problems. New version uses 2 AA batteries and gets 40 hours life PLUS auto shutoff.

Downside is the price, 1000$.

You can get a bose credit card and no payments or interest for a year. 5 year warranty.

weighs 11oz.

thanks

thanks jetdriven. I'll be flying out of ellington so it will be easy to check out those headsets. how are the Telex headsets as far as quality?

I have a set of telex ANR 500's and I love them. They are super light and the ANR works great. They are around 500 bucks. Check around the internet for them.

Headsets

Hey,

You should seriously look into the LightSpeed family of headset products. They have one for just about every budget level and they are oh so comfortable.

I have the 20XL ANR. It is just awesome. Uses 2 AA batteries housed in an inline box. 2 AA's will last me 20-30 hours of flying! I've used mine over the past 3 years in everything from a J-3 cub to the Saab 340 at my 121 job. Their customer service and support is the best of any product I've ever purchased. Lifetime warranty on all components too! Any questions PM me.

This is a little off the subject but it seems that no one ever looks at the microphone when choosing a headset. I suppose the other things are more important. Anyway, I use a David Clark headset and haven't had trouble flying with anyone using a similar unit, but I have noticed that many microphones on other than DC seem to pick up a lot of back ground noise. I'm not talking about not having the squelch set properly, I'm talking about when the person talks, there will be a lot of outside noise (especially in the summer with the vents open). I know when I see a student take out of their bag anything other than a DC I cringe. Obviously some are better than others but I've experienced this with several different brands. Has anyone else expereienced this?

aviator shop

.I went to the aviator shop on Monday and talked to Tony. He was a big help. I told him that I was just starting out, but wanted to buy a nice headset because I planned to stay with flying. He took me through the steps of looking at PNR and ANR and how a headset should fit and why it was important to have a good seal. I think I'm going to end up with the Telex 500 ANR. I tried a set of the 150's and they were kind of heavy. The Flight Com Denali didn't have a good seal, and the DC's were kind of clunky on my skinny head. It was a huge help to have someone experienced helping me choose a headset. I'm glad I didn't drop the $400 for the Denali's on Ebay about a month ago. I would have been screwed:(
