I asked a question about a headset in a recent thread, but it got moved to the frac forum where I don't think it would fit and/or get many answers.

I'm in the market for a new headset, and I've had my sights on the Bose X for a good while. Unfortunately it's a bit out of my price range at the moment, but I've heard that the Bose QC2 with the Ufly mic adapter is a good alternative, and much cheaper than the X.

It seems though that everyone I've heard using that setup flies some kind of jet. I fly a piston aircraft, and would like to know if anyone has any experience with the QC2 in that type of aircraft. Right now I have a pair of bulletproof passive DCs, but I'm finding myself really fatigued after a long day of flying. Would the QC2 actually provide something near the noise attenuation that the Bose X does, or should I just save my money for the X? Thanks!

i fly a cherokee 180 with the uflymic. i was tired of my head vise so i opted to purchase the uflymic. the real upside to this headset is the comfort level. i found that it didnt deliver quite as much noise reduction as my DC but it wasnt too loud as to where i wanted to return it all. i got used to it fairly quickly. the comfort level is well worth the slight lose in noise reduction. unfortunately i havent flown with the bose before so i cant give you a comparison. id recommend it though. especially since it has other uses besides just a headset, plus if you plan on flying a jet some day you have a top of line headset. and for $500 its not a wallet buster. heck if you dont like it you can always return it all.

Do a search on Clarity Aloft, I use it on the Airbus but it's numbers on noise reduction is better than the ANR's, it is not an over the top headset so you don't get that soreness on the top of your head, so comfortable you forget it's there, just my 2 cents

Watch for bose headsets on ebay. I picked up a nearly new one there for about six fifty.

Lightspeed makes a decent headset with good electronics. The bad news is I've known a few folks (myself included) who had the plastic headband fail, but the good news is that when I called them I had it back a day later fully refurbished with new cord battery box, earseals, and the works. Great customer service.

I've had a Lightspeed thirty 3g for about 2 years now and I'm satisfied with it. Not too uncomfortable, was only about 600 bucks. It has 30db passive and 25db active, the batteries are good for about 3 working days of constant use and about 2 weeks for regular on-and-off use. It also has an audio jack for a cell phone or mp3 player. It serves me well in the piston twins.

I second his comments. I used the 30/3g for most of the last two years, a lot of that in a very loud airplane, with great results. Comfy and super quiet. I tried the bose, but the noise attenuation wasn't near as good as the lightspeed, and that was most important to me.

Now, I am using the LS Mach1 (jet) and am pretty happy with it. The mic is a little finicky, always messing with the squelch knob on the intercom. They need to make the mic boom about 3/4" longer.

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I sprung for the bose..there is a reason its number 1...and if your a broke instructor like me...thier 12 month payment plan rocks

Agreed. Kind of a drag to have to put your headset on payments, but trust me on this one...I fly with turboprop jockeys everyday, and those that don't fly with the Bose wish they had one. Your ears are worth the investment, when you think of how much use you will get out of it throughout your career, and how loud you have to turn up the volume on the radios to hear with any other headset (even if they are ANR).
