Does anyone know if the Hawker 125's are all a common type. Mainly the 125-400, and 125-600, and what about the 3ARA

All the Hawkers (except for the 1000) are included with the HS125 type rating. Includes vipers and fans as well.

What zman said is correct....but I strongly recommend some differences training(even if it is just by an experienced pilot in the specific model, and nothing formal) before making a jump like a 600 to a 3ARA. There are subtle differences that can be a real problem.

Major differences, jet v fan

Insist on being "converted" especially if going from fan to jet. Engine start system is interesting, as is the engine management ststem. The jets autopilot can also be "interesting"......and lastly the fuel flows are vast numbers......even on ground.............bumz.

hmmm

same type?

I wouldn't feel safe switching from a 1965 125 with vipers on it (cockpit looks like the Apollo space capsule) and then being expected to fly a 2001 -800XP

but lear does it so maybe its not so bad

It really isn't that bad. I went through some differences training at Simuflite and then did some in the airplane. I fly all hawkers from a brand new XP to a 3A/RA with vipers.

The vipers are actually kind of fun. Little different starting procedure, but all in the all the planes are pretty similar. I also fly a 3A/RA with the fans, and what a rocketship (climb) that thing is. The panels suck, and it's going back to basics, but it's always a good thing to do every once in a awhile.

BTW, just the raw sound of the vipers kind of gives me a woody.

dude thats no sh1t. too bad soccer mom USA doesn't think so and these things are banned in most places

i read somewhere (I think I did anyway :p ) that the 522 engines were similar to the F-4 Phantom engines

later

fave Hawker

Capt Z man, totally agree, the best for me is the fanned 400......a rocket, or actually the fanned 600, 700s fuel capacity but much less weight....

The viper is a fun engine, as to woodies, vipers rule for me too.....

we should all go back to basics.....I am currently flying a G550, and feel the need the need for dials......

Hawker Jets

As previously stated, HS-125 type covers all but the 1000. When you go to take off, command the F/O to set "All ahead FULL and then climb power reduce to all ahead 2/3s". Then if you get the overspeed you'll hear the horn from a 57' Chevy. Enjoy.

Screw that....the Hawker is enough of a dog....push the throttles until they won't go any further forward, and LEAVE THEM THERE! :D

Vipers? Screw Vipers!

The engine that's very similar to the J-79 is the RR Spey. The British put an afterburner on these things and stuck 'em in their F-4Ms - proof that given enough engine, even a brick can fly!

Hang 'em on a GII/GIII and you've really got a screamer!

Dear G 4 driver, from G550 driver. (aka Bumz_Rush), we are from the same school. I just loved your remarks. My close down included the "finished with engines...number 1", always caused new F/O to break into smile......
Also my technical course would start, the 125 is built by the Titanic manufacturing company.....
Frac capt......what happened to your heart.....you have no feelings...
Tis....afterburner of a Hawker, now your talking...

Considering that the Viper is a drone engine, it does quite well. Keep in mind it doesn't have a scavenge pump on the no. 3 bearing. So oil consumption can be a bigger consideration that fuel consumption.

Question for you Hawker Viper pilots....is the viper-powered hawker underpowered? It's just that the few times I've seen em taking off they seem to use all the runway, and then climb at a veeeery shallow angle. Looked like they were doing at most 300/min in the climb!

Or is it because of reduced power due to noise restrictions?

They sure do sound nice, though.

My experience with the viper is limited, but from that and what other more experienced viper guys have told me, the garrett is the underpowered aircraft. What you most likely saw was a noise reduction takeoff. And they bitch 20 series Lears are loud.

The most limiting thing on the Viper Hawkers was their range. We could always fly to FL from MN but only fly back non-stop 50% of the time. Most of us don't start #1 until we're almost on the runway.

Nothing turns fuel in to noise better than a viper!
