Any recent hiring or interviews for Hawaiian Airlines. Got the online app completed oh about 3 months now and it says it is still in review. Just wondering if any one inside or outside knows if they're hiring. Thanks for the 411.

Thanks for your coments greenbayfan. I haven't updated my profile in over 2 years. If you look carefully on my profile it does say 2000+ meaning I have way more than 2000 hours by now. Sorry if this looking deceiving. I'm also flying Lear Jets now. last time I was in a Beehcraft 1900 was 3 years ago.

We still have applicants in the pool, and about 24 more slots to fill. However I think we're done interviewing. If you haven't been through that process yet, you probably won't be getting a call this time around.

As for Dr. Farcas, I have never seen a pilot group get so angry about a hiring process. He made a mockery of our profession, yet there's nothing we can do; HR took the hiring process away from the flight division, and even our Chief Pilot was left out in the cold. Hopefully next time will be better, but we'll have to wait until we get more planes for that to happen.

Hal, do you know who make the decision as to who get selected for the class. I interviewed back in may, and I was told that I was in the interview pool. I am still waiting for the call to do my last screening (pshyc, drug test).
It seems that nobody really knows who makes the final decision. I was told by Sue Y. that there are several people involved in the decision and several pilots I talked to said that there is so much politics going on, and unless your mom works for Mark, or Dad is a current pilot or you are a current checkairman, your chance of getting hired are slim.

Bruddah, There have been a few people get in that don't fit the son/daughter/checkairman profile, but not many. The list gets pared down a lot before it gets to the 'final decision makers', and its these unknown people (who choose which applicants to send on) that are making it tough for a well-qualified but otherwise unconnected person to get hired. I know the Chief Pilot and director of Flight Ops are in on the final choice, but there are a couple others from management too. It can happen, but if you know someone here, have them bug Ray M. and Sue Y. about you and hopefully that will move things along. From what I know, you won't get called for the final screening until you are essentially 'in'. Then the final tests are more of a formality. Good luck!

I have few friends who were in the last couple new hire classes. They all heard that there was a class in August unless RM just came out and said that the hiring was indeed done. Did anybody heard about the 3 airbuses Dunkerley talked about at the last conference call? If I remember right, he said that in 2011, 3 leased 330s should be on property.

I think the current fuel price squeeze has stopped any thoughts of bringing on more aircraft for a little while. If oil drops, look for more planes. If not, it will be status quo for a while longer. The Airbii that Dunkerley talked about were a 'possibility', if we found additional routes that we would be adding. For now, no growth, so no new planes. :(

I heard that a displacement vacancy bid just came out today cancelling 27 pilot position due to the decision to not take the Air Canada 767. So Hiring has come to a stop. The bid said that there will be no furloughs.

You're right bruddah. The displacement bid came out tonight, and essentially cancels the remaining 27 unfilled slots left. It also moves several new Captains back to F/O's. Officially the reason given was the cancellation of the Air Canada 767 and a slight reduction in planned interisland flying. It strikes me as odd though, since when the announcement on the AC767 rejection came out, Dunkerley said we hadn't started hiring for that plane yet. Maybe this is just a move that is timed to coincide with our upcoming contract negotiations. But for now, we keep flying with no furloughs. We have 53 new-hires here, but that will be all for the present. I have a feeling that it may not stay that way for long though. We are extremely short-handed right now, and they're cutting the Captain's positions to less than what we're currently operating with. There's going to be some serious overtime issues in the coming months that they'll be forced to deal with. We're all getting burned out already. I can't imagine we can keep up this pace through the holidays - something's gotta give.

Hal,
do you think that even after all the new hires are on the line, you guys would still be short-handed? Dunkerley did indeed mention that the staffing for the 767 was not reflected in the vacancy bid!

I think we'll be OK on the 717 side. There was quite a bit of expansion there, and we had a lot of upgrades too. The new hires filled in there and on the empty spots left on the 767 from the upgrades. It's the overall 767 staffing I'm baffled about. The new bid has three fewer Captains than we have flying at this very moment, and we're always running short-handed on that side. We're not cutting any routes or flying - and in fact are adding hours when we stop the 767 interisland and start up the second SEA-HNL flights next month. That's why I don't think it will last.

I'm on the 717 side and I don't think we'll be okay there. Guys are getting tired of the 8 leg days and are getting burned out. Mandatory higher line values are going to be repeated in the future. This is especially true on the Captain side.

This seems to be a case of the company saying we've operated with less for the last 4 months why can't we continue?

Hi Jim,

I was referring to the day when we get all of the new-hires & upgrades trained and on the 717. I know it is tough for all of us right now, but with the reduction in planned flying for the 717, you should be properly staffed once they all get online. The 767 however isn't getting a reduction in hours, but is getting a reduction in crews; back to where it was even before the last set of bids came out. Since I look at the daily flight schedule and see "none" for reserves on the 767 every day now, I have to wonder how we're going to do it when we have three less Captains.

It's going to be a long winter.
