Just perused Airline Pilot Central and noticed alot of activity going on and being planned for HI flights. Alaska is up to 24 daily flights, and appears hell bent to create and maintain a stronghold. Southwest received its first -800 (ETOPs ready) last month with more on order. HI is said to happen in 2013 for SWA. It also appears Allegiant has four ETOPs 757-200s that they want to start service this year with and have a HNL pilot domicile? Interesting. I have no idea what the current market is like out there and how the big legacies and Hawaiin Airlines are doing. Is HI big enough for this fight? Who will end up worse off for bringing in all these flights or is there enough to go around?

As far as competition goes, each mainland carrier has it's own route system that it gets feed from and SWA would obviously do that. That's we're their traffic would come from, just like UAL,DAL etc. Hawaiian, on the other hand, does well because it is Hawaiian. They can pretty much fill up a wide body with people that want to start their Hawaii vacation on Hawaiian thanks to it being a local airline. I know it's a marketing cliche, but their Hawaii starts here works as it's coupled with very good service. Hawaiian currently carries 52 percent of all the HNL traffic. That includes the 90 percent of inter island traffic that HAL carries, they carry the most west coast (I believe it's about 33 percent) and we are growing rapidly Internationally. Flights to Japan became profitable quicker than any other new route we have started.
As that article stated, AK is doing fairly well. But they jumped in to the void that was left when ATA and AQ went under. Going forward, one limiting factor for any new entrants that most don't realize is hotel rooms. You can't sell seats if the people can't get a room. No new hotels are being built. I would think that is a bigger obstacle to future growth than anything.

We had a southwest captain on board the other week and he told us that southwest has put a hold on coming to Hawaii... Said they were still planning on it but are pushing it back... Anyone else out there vouch on that...?

Yeah- afraid I've heard the same- still ramping up etops, but slowing down on hawaii just yet

I heard the same thing. I think SWA is scared of HAL 15 aircracft fleet.

I've heard rumors of an HNL base, would solve all the issues with Cali's special rules for workers...IMO, right now the negotiations for Int'l and red eyes are probably delaying Hawaii start.

Later,
KBB

SWA pilots will defer "over water" flying to Air Tran 737NG pilots who have experience flying to exotic and dangerous over-water destinations like Cancun and Key West. Probably a good idea. :D:laugh:
