Well, it certainly wasn't the vortex ring state.

When the Marines first started flying those things, it was frequently said that if you wanted to own a Harrier all you had to do was buy a farm in North Carolina ... and wait.
 
Yeah, this one made the rounds last year. He punched out because the plane was sinking like a rock.

He tried to be a show off and transitioned to forward thrust without having any lift. It's like kicking the chair out from under him. TC

It was a Royal Navy pilot, doing an airshow on the English Coast. BTW, he broke his ankle when he landed on top of his wet jet. I saw the accident report posted on the internet a month ago. I'll send the link if I find it again.
