Just had TCAS II installed in our corporate jet last month, Thanksgiving is special this year......
Wed., 11/27/02, 16,000MSL over TRM VOR;
1. TCAS RA, TRAFFIC,TRAFFIC (traffic @ our altitude, less than a mile) -
2. simultaneous traffic ALERT issued by LA Center...
3. "CHECK VERTICAL SPEED", "climb, CLIMB NOW" alerts by TCAS II.
I did what the system displayed - immmediatly - with NO hesitation - climbed to 17,300 & turned left.
Later review of ATC voice and radar data tapes we found that the intruder aircraft was climbing from 7900 to 16000MSL, VFR sqwak code, not talking to ANYone - had (somehow) not shown up on radar for 5-6 miles prior to incident. ATC was able to track the target for another 10 miles before dissapearing again..... guesstimate was less than 100' vertical and O' lateral on the miss!
We fly over the TRM VOR EVERY time we arrive to SO. CA airspace, always on an IFR flight plane, always with LA Center and have never had a problem..... it is a good idea to be aware of what is going on at all times..... I tell you - I sure enjoyed that turkey last night - even had an extra glass of wine (or 3....) with dinner.
