Looking to buy a handheld GPS unit as a BACKUP. Checking out the Garmin GPSMAP 296 and the AirMap 2000. Any suggestions? Liked the 'Panel' display on the 296, but read where the unit 'reboots' itself at random intervals.

I've been using the 296 for about 6 months and have never experienced nor heard of anyone experiencing a "random reboot".

I chose the 296 over the 2000c because, in part, I didn't wish to "experiment" with a new-release product. I had been using AnywhereMap on a PDA and simply got tired of configuring and dealing with the uncertainity and bugs of brand new software/hardware (as the 2000 is). I decided on the Garmin because of its "refineness". The 2000 has, up to now, has some growing pains.

I couldn't be more happy with it--its very functional, very robust, good screen and readability in all light, etc.

EDIT - here are some pictures of it in action.

Thanks for the advice JeffSKDTW. Nice pics...
Plus, its nice to have a full featured "auto" unit to use on the ground.

I own a Garmin 96C. About the size of a large cell phone, and a great SA tool. A great deal cheaper than the bigger unit (so to speak).
