Since most of New Orleans and the southshore now live in Mandeville, Covington, and Hammond areas, it would make sense to convert the Hammond airport into an commercial airport. We have the population for it. Plus Hammond is a whole lot closer than MSY.
All they would have to do is build a terminal, a control tower, and update the ILS, VOR, VNAV, and lengthen the runways. All of this could be done in a years time.
