I have my own little prediction. The Gulfstream supersonic business jet will replace the G4's and G5's.

So what happens to the NJI pilots when everything Gulfstream makes is supersonic? Assuming the single carrier suit goes south.

When I dropped Mr. Moss (Gulfstream CEO for those of you who don't keep up) at SAV a couple months ago, I asked him when he was going to build us a SS G. He just gave me a sheepish grin. A trade rag three days later quoted him as saying Gulfstream had no plans for an SSBJ. It ain't gonna happen any time soon.

RTRHD is correct. The widebody G (650?) will be flying in the next 18 months and will be a derivative Type Certificate meaning the airplane will go to NJI and not NJA by the terms of the contract.

As to SSBJ's, Aerion in Reno will probably be first to market around 2012 because their concept doesn't rely on changing the Federal Regulations forbidding overland supersonic. The plane is transonic over land, then up to about 1.4 or 1.5 over water, 4000 nm range. The airplane will be about $80 million a copy in today's dollars and I'm guessing NJA will be among the first to operate it. A very smart engineer in Reno named Paul Tracy has been cooking this one up for a couple of years and he's got some real industry hitters on board. Proof of concept is underway. Watch for announcements of risk-sharing partners early next year and launch decision pretty soon.

You have to admit, one day everything Gulfstream makes will be supersonic. Long range aircraft have the biggest need for supersonic speed. 10 hr flight becomes 5 hrs? 14 hr flight becomes 7 hrs. Wealthy people will pay for the speed and then there is no need for the G4/G5 or G6.

What happens to the pilots at NJI? 15, 20 years from now? Is NJI a place to start a career?

What we have here boys is bait in the water......

I'm not going to bite.

But I will say this; NJA/NJI pilots are getting along much better than ever before. And the pilots who are coming over to NJI, from the A side are good, solid people.
