No injuries in Iqaluit plane crash
Last Updated: Monday, December 7, 2009 | 1104 AM CT
A business jet that was trying to land in Iqaluit on Sunday veered off the runway and crashed through a fence. None of the three people on board the jet was injured. The U.S.-registered Galaxy G200 business jet landed in Iqaluit shortly after 11 a.m. ET Sunday, during a stop on a flight from England to San Jose, Calif. It is unclear what caused the plane to crash through a fence west of the runway. The federal Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.

Narrative: A private, U.S. registered Israeli Industries Galaxy was landing on Runway 35 at Iqaluit after a flight from the U.K. when the aircraft went off the side of the runway. The aircraft came to rest approximately 500 feet north of Taxiway Echo and 400 feet west of the centre line of the runway. The aircraft was reported to be substantially damaged as it hit a fence and damaged wires for the ILS. There were three persons on board and no injuries. TSB Montreal was advised. The runway was reported to be 100% bare and dry. METAR CYFB - IQALUIT/NU DATE - TIME 06 DECEMBER 2009 - 1600 UTC - WIND - 330 TRUE @ 19 KNOTS GUSTS 24 KNOTS VISIBILITY 30 STAT. The First Air ATR is on the takeoff roll for runway 35, which is the same runway and direction the G200 was landing. You can see the wheel tracks (which could also be from the rescue vehicles) leaving the runway starting on the right side of the picture and the fence piled up in front of the right wing. They ended up with the nose of the aircraft pointing to the south-east. Luckily everything has been frozen solid the past 2 months in good ole' Fro Bay or the damage could have been worse.

FroBay

Frobay ... currently known as Iqualit is/can be a real handful and an eye opener, expecially in winter. This time of the year there is no day light, to speak of. The wind can go from calm to 75MPH is a heart beat and you better be sure you are talking true direction rather than magnetic when you look at terminal forecasts! It's easy to get up there and find a 90 degree 60 knot cross wind. A viable alternate is ALWAYS required and there are few. BGSF across the Labrador Sea is also a snake pit. East bound ILS to a runway in a Fijord. Circling isn't recommended but sometimes necssary.

Take it from one who's been there more than a few times. Don't try it without a crewmember who's experienced there. Same goes for BGBW and a number of garden spots up that-a-way.

I can't tell where the runway ends with all the snow and ice. Everything is in one piece....how is this news?

I wouldnt say there is no daylight there to speak of this time of the year, I went in there once from BGSF to Iqaluit in a Cheyenne II around winter solstice in the morning and there was it wasnt too bad in terms of lighting.

However it was COLD COLD COLD. Stayed in the airplane, tried to see if the fueler would let me keep an engine idling at all times, but wouldnt let me. From there it was to Churchill and that was even colder!
