Is there a standard for how these are programmed when doing approaches?
Ie do they all do the same sequence on a given approach, a given IAF?

What if there is a hold depicted at the IAF, will they all enter the hold thus crossing the IAF twice? Or will they send you straight in? Or is it generally something you have to select?

Most general aviation GPS units are programmed according to TSO-129. WAAS capable units comply with TS0-146.

All IFR GPS units will follow one of these TSOs, which means if you understand the TSO you are well on the way to understanding how all of them operate.

All IFR approved GPS units, if programmed and flown correctly, will result in the same path over the ground, and in the case of 146/WAAS units, the same vertical profile, regardless of manufacturer.

"What if there is a hold depicted at the IAF, will they all enter the hold thus crossing the IAF twice? Or will they send you straight in? Or is it generally something you have to select?"

If there is a required course reversal (hold or procedure turn), then the holding point will be a "fly-over" and the unit will prompt you to go to "obs" or "suspend" mode to fly the reversal.

All IFR approved GPS units will give you the same apporach. All will switch modes (RNP Value) from Terminal (1.0 RNP) to Approach (0.3 RNP) within 2NM of the FAF. Hope this helps
