If an approach is titled "NDB or GPS A" and the NDB is out of service, is it legal to fly the approach under IFR using GPS only? I think so, but a friend said the FAA says no. Can someone please point me to a place in the AIM or FAR's that exlpains this?
You should be fine. At one time you weren't allowed to fly a GPS approach without an operaive ground-based NavAid, but that was something like Phase I or II of the GPS-implementation. Now we have all those wonderful GPS standalone approaches. This is assuming part 91 ops and an IFR-certified GPS.
Look it up in the AIM, it states that you do the approach with the NDB not working. Look it up in the GPS section, the 2005 edition is much better than the older ones.
