I am researching flight schools and I would like any input about good schools (reputation, financial stability, rumors, etc.) I am almost finished with my private so I am conserned with my Inst., SEC, MEC, CFI, II and perhaps MEI. I am still unsure if I need or want the MEI. Any advice on that would be apreciated as well. I am looking for the smaller schools. I do not feel the need to go to the large "academys" nor do I want PFT. I have looked at a couple such as Airman Flight School in OK and Soell Aviation at Panama City, FLA, both with ab-initio programs in the mid $20K range but I am wondering about Instructing options after I finish, such as where to look for employment and how I should aquire more multi time without my MEI.
thanks

MEI

With reguards to the MEI it is a must. There are always exceptions, but now adays with the highly competitive market, the more ratings and multi time you have the better.

Have you checked into Flight Safety Academy? It is a very good school and you come out with some good multi time. A total of 60 hours for the CIME program. The best part is doing the instrument rating in the Piper Seminole. I will post the link at the bottom. Try the video tour if you have high speed internet access. You can also call 1-800-800-1411 and request an info packet that explains the program. I went all the way through MEI and loved it.
Good luck,
ILS

FSI

I instructed at FlightSafety Academy for just over a year beginning in 1991. I did not stay because I did not care at all for the management, but I liked the program, equipment and facilities. The program is expensive, but I feel that you get what you pay for in terms of an overall quality training experience, name recognition, and future opportunities.

I don't think you have much to worry about in terms of financial stability at FSI. The place was a Fortune 500 company when I worked there. It is owned now by Warren Buffet, who is a major financier and mover-and-shaker.

As far as the management goes, three of the people who were there when I was are now helping to run the place. All three are absolutely first-class people. I recommend FSI highly.

If you choose to get your CFI, you should get all three airplane ratings. Having all three will give you more options. In that regard, thoroughly investigate instructing opportunities at the schools you are considering before making your decision.

Good luck with your decision.

I've found that with a little digging, you can find a great flying program that's (comparitively) affordable. There's UNO, Univerity of Nebraska at Omaha, Indian Hills and Northern Iowa Comm College in Iowa, and several locally if you start hunting. I just know of these because they are local, but I hear good things from the graduates, and the prices are phenomenal.

I hope people keep posting replys. because I could use the info.

Westwind

Westwind School of Aeronautics has a great program in the mid 30's range. I did my IR-MEI there and worked as a check airman there for almost three years. Good weather and nice equipment.
