Hope you gentlemen are having a good morning, and might be able to help out a lowly knuckle dragger (A&P).;) I'm planning on leaving a passenger airline for a cargo airline, however I'm going for a very different position, I'm trying for Flight Engineer, and I"m running into a little snag called a FAA Flight Engineer certificate. I have no problem working my own way through, and spending a little $$ within reason. I am currently studying for my written through Gleim, and now I'm down to a little deal called getting seat time and preparing for an oral exam and a 12 hr check flight. As far as seat time would time in a Class A Sim count? 63.37 states that a comercial pilot with instrument rating needs 5 hours flight training as a flight engineer, and there's a sub paragraph under that that states the 5 hours may be done in a sim. Right below that sub paragraph covers the MTC portion which the experience is well covered except for the 5 hours.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Most operations require you to show up with the written exam passed, they then put you through the training for their certificate and give you a checkride. After that they writeout a temporary and send you to work. Not sure if this answers any of your questions? Are you trying to get the license on your own? I think there are a couple of schools that do 727FE training. Not many operations left that hire PFE's these days.

Actually this is a 747-200 operation. The recruiter that I had a chat with said that they require that I show up with a Flight Engineer Certificate (type rating not necessary as they will provide me with a 3 week ground school), and an A&P Certificate. I'm trying to get the license on my own, and I do have access to a 727-200 and L-1011 sim, I'm just waiting to hear back from the Flight Instruction Dept. if I can get some time with an instructor in the sim, obviously 727 sim would be better than the L-1011 but I'll take any time and help I can get.

I going under the idea that you do not hold a commercial pilot certificate (not listed in your profile). Under which subparagraph of 63.37(b) are you applying? Again, I guessing it is suparagraph 1 (3 years experience working on big engines).

I see nothing in 63.37 that addresses simulator. 63.39 says you can use a simulator in the practical test for the emergency response portion of the test.

Appendix C addresses the use of simulators in an approved training program (which would apply only if you are using subparagraph (7) of 63.37(b). Otherwise, I don't think it is applicable to your case.

It seems to me, you need 5 hours of real airplane seat time. Even if you applied under subparaph (7), you must still have 5 hours of seat time in an airplane if you don't have a commercial pilot certificate.
