I still have not gotten any training to fly and I would need to hear feedbacks on flight schools in Hawaii. I would be planing to fly soon because I will turn 16 soon. Where should I go and where should I avoid? I am in Honolulu. I plan to finish all my flight training at a flight school in Hawaii or if I move to the mainland for college I would finish my training there. I plan to get a degree in Business but I am not sure about aviation degrees because I really don't know if I should get an aviation degree. I feel pilots that get hired in the majors without a aviation degree is a military pilots so I may need to get an aviation degree.

Flight schools

Because of its size, you may not find many schools from which to choose in Hawaii. You may have to come to the mainland to train.

When I worked at FlightSafety, I knew of a young man from Hawaii who came there to train. It worked out for him; I understand he got a job at Aloha Island Air.

You don't necessarily need an aviation degree to get a job with the majors, or any flight entity. I personally like an aviation degree because of the knowledge provided, and disagree with those who feel an aviation degree is useless outside of aviation. Having said all that, the most important thing is to get the degree, and from an accredited college or university. There are some who'll disagree, but that's been discussed many times elsewhere on the board.

Good luck with your choice of schools. I saw your query about P-F-T on the other thread; I strongly urge you to get as much advice as possible about P-F-T before going in that direction.

I personally did not flight train here, but I know there is plenty of good training available. A very good friend of mine did all of her private and instrument training at Moore Aviation and I have witnessed the superb results. I hear good things about Flight School Hawaii. There are other folks on this board who know much more about this than I, so hopefully a couple of them will see this and respond. Don't worry about getting an aviation degree, just get a degree in whatever interests you. Pray for surf.

There is a wide variety of good flight schools in hawaii. Anything from UND wich is very structured and you can also obtain a degree...to many well organized private flight schools like flight school hawaii and georges aviation. If you would like a list of all the web sites and schools in hawaii let me know.

I also have many friends that are instructors and have quality aircraft for a decent price if you are interested. Can be ran out of dillingham airfield (or honolulu) which will significantly reduce your cost of training. PM me if you are interested in more info.

I am from Hawai'i and worked the line at HNL for a short time. KS mentioned UND, and I wanted to put the plug in for them as well.

I am a UND grad, however the satellite program in Honolulu wasn't around until right after I graduated, I did all of my time in the Forks.

Since you are interested in flying and getting a degree in business I wanted to make sure you knew that the program in Hawai'i is in partnership with HCC. You can spend two years flying in Honolulu, and getting your general requirements out of the way before transferring to UND to finish both the flying and a bachelors degree.

Don't let Grand Forks ND scare you away, it does get cold, but you can adapt and when I was there we had an active Hawai'i Club with all the prop-heads and the grad students in the PT/OT programs.

UND offers aviation degrees that are combined with business degrees, I think they are issued by the business school, but I am not 100% on that.

I suggest looking at www.aero.und.edu for more info, and getting in touch with HCC, they can provide info as well. If you would like more info about my time at UND from a Hawai'i kids perspective PM me.

I will chime in with a vote for Flight School of Hawaii. Nice planes, professional instructors, part 141 program. I would also say not to worry about an aviation degree. Get your degree in Business, just as an option to fall back on.

I hear good things about flight school hawaii but their rental rates are too high compared to others. Someone told me they charge somewhere between $110-$125 an hour for a C152 and somewhere between $120-$140 for a C172 when I could get a C150 for $62 at Georges Aviation (part 61) or a C172 for about 80-90 at flight schools in HNL. I do not have a job and I am very poor and I am sitting with $3000 in cash I collected so far which still would not get my a private pilots licence anywhere in HNL. I also feel my parents would not want to contribute money for flying and I do not want to ask them for money. Any good flight schools at a low cost?

well, it tends to be that if you want cheap, the equipment will be too.. especially in hawaii. i would have to put in plugs for flight school hawaii, moore air and UND. at UND you can get financial aid to help you with the training costs.

as for a degree... get the degree you really want to get, in a field you're interested in. the degree you have doesnt matter within aviation or outside of aviation. the "falling back" thing is bogus.. most people in the real world arent working in the same field as what their degree is in anyway. if you want the aviation degree, go for it.. if you want a business degree go for it..
