Just curious if getting the gold seal will look good on an resume? My boss wants me to go to the FSDO and get mine.

I'm not planning on instructing as a career, and was wondering if a potential future employer (corporate, charter, cargo, etc.) would even care if you were/are a gold seal flight instructor?

Thanks.

Oh yeah... Once I was being interviewed for a job with NASA and the guy was like "ok, you are just the guy we are looking for to fly back and forth for our new moon base. One last thing though, I just need to see your Gold Seal CFI certificate." and then I lost the job.

Why would you not? All it costs you is a trip to the FSDO.

There is no good reason why you should not get your gold seal if you qualify for it. It may not end up being at the top of your list of accomplishments and experience, but it will provide evidence that you have been a good flight instructor and that you take your job seriously. Those are work habits that an employer will like to see.

There'an old joke in the cfi business, maybe you've heard it, but I always thought it was funny and true:

Q: What does one gold seal CFI say to another?
A: So you wasted your day off at the fsdo too, huh?

Congrats if you qualify, if you do go get it, do it for personal satisfaction, not because it will get you anything.

What does it take to qualify for a gold seal?

From FAA Advisory Circular AC 61-65D:

18. GOLD SEAL FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATES. The specific requirements for the gold seal flight instructor certificate are contained in FAA Orders 8700.1, General Aviation Operations Inspector's Handbook, and 8710.3C, Pilot Examiner's Handbook. Flight instructor certificates bearing distinctive gold seals are issued to flight instructors who have maintained a high level of flight training activity and who meet special criteria. Once issued, a gold seal flight instructor certificate will be reissued each time the instructor's certificate is renewed. Applicants for gold seal flight instructor certificates must meet the following requirements:

a. The flight instructor must hold a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating (glider flight instructors need not hold an instrument rating) or an ATP certificate;

b. The flight instructor must hold a ground instructor certificate with an advanced or instrument ground instructor rating; and

c. The flight instructor must have accomplished the following within the previous 24 months:

(1) Trained and recommended at least 10 applicants for a practical test, at least 8 of whom passed their tests on the first attempt;

(2) Conducted at least 20 practical tests as a designated pilot examiner, or graduation tests as chief instructor of a 14 CFR part 141 approved pilot school course; or

(3) A combination of the above requirements. (Two practical tests conducted equal the credit given for one applicant trained and recommended for a practical test.)

Thanks

Well thats why I haven't already. ( I have had 14 out 15 pass their check rides. ) My schedule is so booked 4-5 students a day it is hard to take the day off to go to the FSDO.

Thanks for everyones input.

I just just got my gold seal added on to my CFI. I did it mostly to renew my CFI but I am glad i got it. If you can get it, you might as well.
