That machine has some serious thrust to power out of that AOA at such a slow airspeed.

The 1st video: must have been a student. That is NOT the way you waveoff!
Or must be some Russian technique :-(

The second video, well, or our boats, those tires would have popped in about 10 feet then you would have seen sparks as the rims grind on the flight deck! FWIW, on our carriers, the boat will launch you are flying speed, parking brake set, engine off. Of course, the next phase of flight may not be so fun.

Good times!

Anyone know if the tailhook is designed so that it wouldn't hook at that angle? The opening may only catch the wire at certain angles. Navy guys?

Nope, inflight engagements are a possibility. Suppose at the angle that guy was flying, it's possible the hook would not have caught, but I would not have bet on it.

I've investigated a Hornet that took an inflight engagement (the guy knew it as he was rotating, slack ran out, ... about 20 feet in the air ;-( Completely crushed aircraft, pilot walked away with no injuries at all, airframe took all the energy - lucky him.

I'm not a Navy guy though, just thought I'd answer. I did go to a Navy flight school though.

Fins up, "stab 1st..." that's funny as $hyt!
