For those of you familiar with the GNS-XLS, is it possible to enter a VOR radial in the flightplan section? I have sat down with the book, and played with the unit in our aircraft on several occasions and can not figure it out.

I know how to enter airways in the flightplan. EG: for J48 - you put in #J48 and it will allow you to select how far along that airway you want to go.

But, when ATC issues an individual radial to fly, it won't allow me to enter it in. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks.

It's been a while since I've done it, but try the following:

Enter VOR, ie. XYZ* (enter the *)

A page will come up that your verify the VOR and it will have you enter the radial/DME. If you have EFIS, the way point will show up XYZ*.

Again, its been a while and I hope this is correct.

2000flyer is right on.

You can even do (xyz*1), (xyz*2) etc etc. Like for the Quiet Bridge Visual into SFO. Works Awesome!

I like to enter ABC*10 should it be a 10 DME fix off ABC VOR

that way I can keep track of things a little better

you can also put a "radial" off an NDB but you can only put * to identify it

for example

DAL NDB (example) would be DALNB* in the box, with you defining the "radial" you want it to display

this can enhance situational awareness at 3rd World non-radar NDB approaches

JUST REMEMBER that sometimes you need to put the VOR, the homemade fix, then the VOR AGAIN, so the box does what you want. For example, in a VOR approach, say you are south of the ABC VOR and need to cross it, then track 270 outbound till 7 dme fix, then make a right turn back to VOR, you would put

ABC
ABC*7
ABC
KABC

or similar

another example, unrelated to above

also, say you are 100 miles from ABC VOR and ATC says "Westwind One Whisky Whisky, fly present heading until intercept and track inbound 090 radial off Maverick.

You could if you want, take a look at your physical DME from Maverick, say its 100 miles, then put in TTT*50, using 090 radial programmed in. Take a look at your moving map and re-adjust your DME distance in the box until its straight ahead on the moving map. I usually halve my physical DME and start with that.

I am sure their is some fancy formula on how to get it but after about two FMS attempts I am pretty close

:)

** if at 3rd world fields with no ATC or tower, when on the ramp idling, go to VNAV page, the top right hand number is your current elevation, you can use that as "field elevation" if you have no altimeter setting or absolutely no idea of your field elev. Its a good starting point anyway

This is good GNS stuff thanks SATPAK.

Though for flying a heading to intercept, I find it easier to go to heading mode, enter the heading then on the next line, press back and "intercept" should come up and it will intercept.

Now here's a question that's come up at an airport we fly into. How do you make the Fing box fly a DME arc to an "uncharted" DME arc. I understand that flying a DME arc is easy enough if it's already in the database, but what if Center says "cleared to fly a 20 DME arc of ABC VOR, intercept the XYZ localizer, cleared ILS 21 approach."

good question, I have never done an "uncharted" DME arc with the GNS. I just go to heading bug and drive around the arc

I will however, as a matter of habit, have the IAF and feeder fixes that are appropritate to my area in the box for SA purposes, even on ILS, so its on the moving map
