Hey guys and gals I have a question reguarding glass cockpits primarily in the GA industry. I am crrently working on my Masters and I am writing my thesis on Glass cockpit transitions and safety. Now I just got checked out in cirrus SR-20 and due to my backround with the Garmin 430 found it relitivly easy. However, I understand that a lot of people are having some troubles with this and other glass pannels ie Garmin 1000. Anyways, Does anyone know about the dangers assosiated with this transition phase and if possible any statistics or data analysis. Heck if anyone knows even just some good web sites to visit I would be much abliged. Thanks for your help.

From talking to a Cirrus rep. on the east coast and some old time flight instructors who are teaching in the Cirrus, they've mentioned that anyone going from the traditional "steam" gauges to the glass cockpit has a much easier time transitioning than someone who starts off in the glass cockpit right off the bat and wants to transition over to the traditional "steam" gauges.

I would suspect that would be the case, because with steam gauges, you learn to fly the airplane first. With the glass, you are learning to fly the glass, then the airplane.

The glass stuff would be nice in IMC.

And it appears, that once moving to glass from steam gauges, most never want to go back.

In the glass and steam article I linked too, the glass students were behind the steam students for several weeks, when it came to flying the airplane. But at the same time, the glass students dove right into IFR instruction right off the bat.

.

And who can blame them. ;)

That's probably because all of their primary instruction was spent looking at the bright screen, trying to figure out how to fly the airplane looking at the glass, not outside the glass.

My favorite cockpit item was a large piece of card I'd use to cover all the flight instruments - now lets do steep turns etc.

I prefer steam instruments at my current job...the glass is just too bright and hard on the eyes ;)

Oh, yeah, I believe you. Did I tell you about the bridge??

I carry a large towel in my flight bag. The first many flights, the towel may suddenly cover the entire panel.

It's amazing how quick that breaks the head down and locked habit.

Captdorn,

Good Luck on the Masters. For reference material there are many safety or training related web sites you can find with more info than you will need. Here are a few sites to get you started, I just went to the faa.gov web site and did a search for glass cockpits:

www.faa.gov/education_research/training/fits/presentations/media/avemco.ppt

www.faa.gov/education_research/training/fits/presentations/media/cirrusdesign.ppt
