There are 3 slots for current employees to be listed as recommendations in the on-line application. All 3 slots must be filled for you to make it to an interview (or most likely to get a meet & greet). One of the 3 can be your sponsor.

Do all 3 need to be guys that have flown with you.

I don't know if that's a hard, fast rule but my impression is that recs from people you haven't flown with are not viewed as highly. I don't think non-flying recs are specifically prohibited. The online rec for employees asks in what capacity you know the applicant and if you have flown with them - so I know they care.

The only guy that needs to have flown with you is the guy sponsoring you and attending the meet and greet with you.

I have given recs to guys I know, but have not flown with.

The bottom line: Your sponsor should be your heavy hitter/ anchor. Ultimately it is that person that will make or break your ability to get the call for the interview. Then it's all on you.
